Has anyone seen a Roof Cargo basket on a MINI yet?
General MINI TalkShared experiences, motoring minutes, and other general MINI-related discussion that applies to all MINIs, regardless of model, year or trim.
Its a Yakima rack with a Yakima basket. I wish the basket was a little longer. Do they come in different lengths? I know nothing about this stuff as i bought mine used and ready to go!

You can always add a Yakima Load warrior extension for around $100
The Yakima Load Warrior Extension increases the capacity size of your Load Warrior by 40% to 62 x 39 x 6.5 inches. Requires a crossbar spread of 30 inches. Includes adjustable accessory bar. Easily attach bike, ski, and boat mounts directly to the basket. Weather resistant, heavy-duty steel construction guarantees years of use.
This would be a cool option for taking your track tires to a high performance driving event or an autocross. The rack alone probably weighs less than the sunroofs on these cars. Even if you had a sunroof, I'm sure the rack could be mostly unbolted and removed.
I bought the OEM bars for the Clubman and just picked up the Sportrak Basket which is made by Thule, but only costs $180. It looks a lot like the Thule MOAB:
We are going to try and mount it this weekend so I will take some pics when we do and post them.
Is the roof mounting system really sturdy? Does it scratch the white roof when installing it?
Yea its pretty F'ing sturdy. if i yank on the basket from the side of the car, it shakes the whole car left/right without the mount/basket moving...
As far as scratches go, it hasnt put any on there. Its got clear (what i think are silicone) caps that go underneath each of the four 'feet'. But i have been told it can introduce scratches, but i figure thats cuz ppl dont take the time to clean the silicone bottom caps before re-installation.
What i do before each re-install of the rack is take off all four silicone caps and wash them in a mild dawn soap solution. This restores them to an almost sticky feel. Only after that do i throw everything on the car...

Here's a pic of my rack. Since this picture, I've added 3 Yakima bike holders to the basket's cross bars. It's just brushed Stainless Steel so far, but I'm going to get it Electropolished to match the car's chrome trim:
Creeve, very clean design. One word of warning though, make sure the angle stock that loops under the cross bars is beefy enough, or reinforced enough, to support loads on the front and rear sections. One option would be to add simple bolt-on connecting straps that go over the bars (after mounting of course) to tie the sections together. This would effectively increase your leverage 3-4 times over the stock 1" angle stock.

Yea that is exactly what I had in mind. Like a u-bolt over an axle. I just didnt bother modeling it.
