Dealers fresh out of MINI Coopers
The nation's 82 Mini franchises are out of cars, and dealers can do little more than take orders and deliver preordered units for the rest of the year.
As fuel prices have risen, demand for the Mini Cooper has outstripped supply.
"For the last three months, we were selling from inventory," said Jim McDowell, vice president of BMW's Mini division. "There's no way (July) can be as good."
McDowell said that dealers have a one-day supply of cars and that 81 percent of the cars delivered this month have been those that consumers have configured and ordered.
In June, Mini sold 5,211 units, up 24.8 percent from the same month last year. That followed sales increases of 52.8 percent in May and 39.4 percent in April.
Through the first half of the year, Mini sales are up 33.6 percent to 26,400 units.
Dealers who have been asking for more cars won't get much satisfaction soon. Mini will boost production for the United States, but only by between 2,000 and 3,000 cars this year.
The Mini plant in Oxford, England, is running three shifts, seven days a week. It builds about 800 cars a day for 80 markets.
McDowell also said Mini plans to expand its dealership network to 95 stores by 2011.
He said that in some regions of the country, dealers are too far apart to service customers.

Bad news for the US...
good news for Mini. Makes the case for some more capital investment.... And the Austrian factory will add 60k-80k a year in capacity, but that's not for a few years...
Also, every extra car that come here makes less money for Mini cause of the exchange rate....

Out of Cars
When I went for a test drive, I was glad that the dealer did not have one to sell me! I would have walked away with one that day instead of bashing my head against the keyboard trying to come up with the perfect Mini to fit my budget!
The dealership where I was said that they had 20 coming for August and 72 for September. You just have to order to get one and hope that who you order from has a decent allocation. Wouldn't it be nice to know that you have 72 cars coming and most will be sold before they hit the lot?

Sorta makes sense with the demand for higher MPG cars. Cars like Prius and Honda Civics are experiencing similar low days of supply stats. I looked at the dealer's site from where we purchased our 07' miniofconcord.com -they show having a bunch of inventory units but now instead of posting and selling at the MSRP pricing as they used to, they are now posting "contact us"
Talking of MSRP+, I was at MINI of Mountain View last week. They were advertising Coopers at +$1500, S's at +$2500 and JCWs at +$3500. And then the ones on the lot had extra options to get the price up, like the MC with the JCW aero kit, going for $30k.
This is worse than it was in 04, then they only wanted +$1000 on a Cooper (and we got away with +$500).

I almost bought my 05 from MINI of Mountain View. They wanted $3500 over MSRP for a Cooper S and they were quite rude about it. It felt like I had to fight with them just to get a test drive. I also went to East Bay MINI and their sales staff was much nicer. I test drove the car there and they were selling at MSRP but there was a 10-12 month wait. I wound up buying mine from Classic MINI in Ohio and made a fun road trip out of it. I did take my MINI to Mountain View for service and their service department was great.
Now the MSRP+ costs is that the base MSRP or the MSRP with options? Because if it's with options it has to go up.
We ordered ours from Baron's Mini in Kansas City and they charge you whatever the MSRP comes off the mini website when you choose your options.

I was back at the dealer this morning. I remarked to the SA that there seemed to be more MINIs than usual on the lot and he volunteered that they had a lot more in stock than usual. They have a substantial used inventory when they never used to manage to keep and and they'd had to store 30 new MINIs on the overflow lot which they'd never needed to before. They'd also got 10 new ones for use as loaners, which is very good news.
There was totally unoptioned 09 Cooper-S on the floor (nothing extra cost above base MSRP) which they had their usual markup sticker on, but they only wanted extra $1000 for it. I'm not sure I've ever seen a show floor model without any options before.

Dealer lot here is overflowing with them too....
The recession is hitting all the manufactures hard now, that's why I thought Congress was way out of line the way they were treating the Big Three here. They were acting like the lack of sales was totaly their fault because of poor product... BS if this thing continues a lot of car companies will be in trouble. But the bankers walk in and get Billions without any oversite or tough questioning....
By the way Congress was able to agree and pass their own pay increase.....

Ralph Schomp MINI in Denver must have over 100 cars, new dealer stock, MINI Next CPO, demos, and others, and I dont think they're dealing much on them because the same cars that were there in Nov and Dec are still there now. (Schomp is still an MSRP or slightly less, $250-$500, dealer on ordered cars.)
Contrast this back in July when I traded my R53 for top $$ and ordered my R56: zero used, zero dealer stock, zero demos for sale. My O my how times have changed!

yeah the market for hybrids has also tanked as of late. Mannheim Auction reports place wholesale auction prices for used hybrid trades at about 50% of the lowest NADA/KBB values.
my buddy who's a Honda sales manager is sweating the Insight hybrid roll out here soon. "It couldnt happen at a worse time," he said, "Americans have short memories."

The not being here to stay is true..
but the part about this summer is somewhat questionable. OPEC is hoping to get oil to $75 a barrel in the next few months, but that's still only 50% of peak price....
