To me it seems the mini looks so much cooler up close for some reason than standing a few paces away from it...say across the street from a parked mini.

I was just walking by one with a friend. Walking next to it, it just seemed so much more impressive.

Your thoughts?

I think it can be equated with people. A beautiful person will likely look much more stunning close-up than from a distance.

looking into the car from the back window at the cockpit is pretty impressive.

I noticed when guys and gals take pictures of their mini, many times the picture taker is from a squatted or a low position...but I see that a lot in many pictures of other cars...I guess it give the car a more aggressive look.
