So why all the MINI hate?
Can't sleep.... clown'll eat me. Can't sleep... clown'll eat me.
It's not that I care about what they think, just that it's astounding that it would cross their minds to say what they say.
And, yes, it is their loss, since they CHOOSE to buy used, sometimes beat up cars, just to get big power. Different strokes for different folks. /shrug

Same story here, almost.
Husband was reamed about the car after posting a thread on his GT500 forum with pics of both the GT500 and Mini together. Most had positive comments, but some smart butts carried it a bit too far with the gay thing.
They ended up clearing their post after the DH sent a few choice words of wisdom their way.
I've been hearing it left
and right
because everyone's always seen me in lifted trucks with big tires over the years. They tell me I just don't look
right. I could care less
because it sure feels right to me.
Besides it's the only thing I've owned that gets excellent gas mileage to boot.

I screamed NO and informed the lady it was a MINI cooper, and was quite proud of my parents who stood up for me telling the lady all about it. The great part they had only seen the car for the first time about 5 mins before the comment
( I had them convinced they need one even before my MINI was in the US )The other was my cousin who just thought they were ugly, but she drives an 80 something LeBaron
........ I had no come back.AHHHH Pennywise !!! No way I am getting any sleep tonight !!
Smiley
I had this episode just a few weeks into my first MCS:
Redneck in pick-up: Hey f*g, do you know that's a gay guy's car?
Me: Are you saying that to put me down, or because you want to ask me out?
Redneck *confused*: Uh, ****** you then!
Me: Oh! So you DO want to ask me out!
(light turns green, MCS leaves pick-up back at the stop light)

It isn't just with MINIs. Often in life, when you make an assertive and positive decision, the slackers and quacks around you try to bring you down. When that happens, just play early Sonny and Cher tapes!
i did have a friend try to get me to consider other cars, but that was after i ordered the MINI. they wanted me to consider a nissan altma, but there is a ton of them driving around. i told a co-worker that and he said why get a car everyone has get something that there is not a lot of. in my town there probably is about 10-15 MINIs.
all the comments from friends have been positive and i even had a complete stranger tell me he like it.
I've had mixed reviews myself. Some love it and want one of their own, others can't seem to get their heads wrapped around the fact that I traded my Jag in for it. Loved my last car but this is my favorite car in years! Twice the fun, twice the MPG and only need half the parking room
. About the only question that I get on a regular basis is how at 6'3" and 245, do I get myself into that "little thing". I am always glad to show them the leg room and take them for a ride.
2nd day with my Mini:
Ate out at a restaurant with outdoor seating, the Mini in plain view from where I sat....overheard three different conversations about the car from people sitting around me or walking past...all positive, all a little jealous.

We often buy, drive, and modify cars for reasons completely unrelated
to transportation - but this is nothing new to anyone on this forum.
For example, folks that drive large crew cab pick-up trucks, with
dualies and fifth wheel mounts, don't find much use for a mini. But
they customize and put on alloy rims, cold air intakes, all the
trimmings. I sometimes visit a Toyota Camry forum - they install CAI,
lowering springs, custom body work, engine mods, anti-sway bars,
coil-overs, 20-inch wheels ... c'mon - on a Camry? But they do it.
My experience has been that the negative comments about minis are
generally from people who either have not driven the car, have not
been in the car when it has been driven in a spirited manner, or else
don't car about performance but rather some other aspect.

... oh, wait... that's a bad point... Don't mention that one!
The MINI is more polarizing than most cars. I've found people have strong feelings about it that teeter at either end of the spectrum, not so much lazing about in the middle. It's not a Ford Taurus, after all! And thank god, right? I've received nothing but positive feedback about my car, and it only gets worse if they go for a ride.
Most of the compliments I get are from dudes, and maybe it comes from their desire to own one but not having the guts. I'll silently pity the naysayers and ignoramuses. Life is too short to deny yourself the joy of owning a car you truly love if only to bypass a few dumb remarks.

I have never really had any harsh comments about my MINI. I get a lot of admiring comments and questions with people asking me how I like it.
Funny thing is I have a had several people say that they wanted a MINI but bought a Honda/Mazda/Ford or whatever. When I ask why they didn't buy the MINI the response is usually something along the lines of "I don't know" or "I bought a Civic for the gas mileage" or "my wife didn't want a MINI."
What I do get a lot of is not so much bad comments but people that know me look at me like I am from a different planet. I am a big guy at 6'3" and most can't understand why I would have such a small car. Plus I work in a fairly conservative line of work and most in my line of work seem to think I am strange for having such a car. Of course they are right and I enjoy being something other than ordinary.
I love it when people do not understand. It verifies why I bought a MINI - it sets me apart from the usual.

I have gotten a few comments, but once you give em a ride... they usually change their tune.. a lot of it out of ignorance, not knowing what the car is, and some of it is jealousy, not being able to afford the car... and then some people are just asses.
I was filling gas at the same time as a fully loaded Dodge Truck - Hemi. So I asked him if his' requires 93 octane gas and started talking about cars and he said that he likes Mini too. Nice conversation but my tank is full and his Hemi is still 1/4 full so I have to go.
I think the haters don't get the attention with their toys as much as the Mini.
