F-1 back flip at Monza

I've been a big F-1 fan since I was fourteen (62 now!) and I remember seeing

a car do a back flip coming off the last corner(Parabolica) onto the main

straight. Do any of you mature gentlemen remember that and if you do:

who, when, etc. I believe this would have been late 70's or early 80's.

Thanks.

Don't remember that, but do remember the 'Benz doing the double back flip at Le Mans in the mid-90's

The only bad crash that I recall in the parabolica was Derek Warwick in the Lotus in 1990...the race was halted after 2 laps and Warwick was unhurt and restarted the race in his T car.

Jochen Rindt was killed during final practice at the parabolica in 1970 but his car never flipped.

You're not thinking of Gilles Villeneuve's fatal flips at Zolder in Belgium in 1982?

I've followed F1 since sometime in the '60s, and I can honestly say that I have no recollection of an F1 car flipping. And by flipping, I mean having the nose lift off the ground so that the car catches air and does and nose over tail roll. Several other formulae have had cars flip. The hill on the main straight at Mosport (near Toronto, Ontario) was reprofiled when the old CanAm cars started having the noses lift at the crest of the hill. I've seen NASCAR cars go airborne, but only after a collision. Gilles Villeneuve went airborne when he touched wheels with the car he was overtaking. And there have been some other F1 crashes that have been pretty spectacular. But I can't say that any of them became airborne just from aerodynamic force alone. Sorry not to be able to confirm your story. -- Darryl

Yeah, that's Christian Fittipaldi (Emerson's nephew) that goes airborne in the Minardi F1 car after clipping the rear of his teammate Pierluigi Martini at the finish of the 1993 Italian GP at Monza.
