Hard to do if you live in the hinterlands. My closest dealer (and where I bought my car) is 2.5 hours away. The next is 3.5 and the next 4.5. Makes it hard to play one dealer against another. However, it is a different story if you live in or near a big city.
Very good point, although I was talking about getting the best price when selling a used MINI. Unless a prospective buyer understands the wide variety of options that MINI offers, they might be confused as to why they saw another used MINI that's the same year and model as the one you're selling, for $10k less.

It still happens if your are trying to work a good trade-in deal. No other dealers around = no competition. Different story, however, if you are doing a private sale.

We paid around $33K for the car in April '09. It now has 27K miles on it.

Dealers offered us no better than $22K in trade.
Looks like we'll be keeping the JCW.
Wow, that is bad. I wonder if it's just a sign of the economy. Last year when I bought my '09 JCW, I traded in an '08 MCSa and the dealer gave me 23500 for it. (25K miles)

I would have thought my '09 JCW would be worth more.

Of course, after everything I'm having to do to my car now, it'll be a keeper for life...lol.

That seems like a great trade-in. I've seen dozens of clean, low mileage, '08 Cooper S decently loaded for well under $20k.

As for the economy: Not sure on that one. Its argumentative as to the current state of the economy compared to this time last year; or even two years ago.

However, the price that a dealer offers for trade-in is only half of the picture. It would be interesting to see what his retail price would be compared to the $22k wholesale for the JCW. If there is a lot of air between the 2 numbers, then he lo-balled the car for the trade-in. Definitely a way to maximize your profit on a used car...

I bought an '09 used JCW in February. 8k miles. Sticker with dealer installed aero pack was between $40 and 41k. Paid $24k at a local non-MINI dealership that had the car for almost 6 months. Good to be buying, but not to be selling unless you find the right person.

If you were talking about any other brand, I'd say I agree. However, with Mini, there isn't much negotiating on the retail price so it's not like someone can say well, I made it on the trade in but didn't pay as much retail. I'd say it's pretty safe to say that most everyone pays the same retail.

How's the 335d treatin' ya? I'm a HUGE diesel fan & if they offered that in a manual transmission, I'd definitely own one.
Very well. It's quite fun to drive and the torque makes for a very usable powerband for day-to-day street driving.
