Upon taking delivery, how many miles and what was the average MPG?

...before posting pix...

...before posting my 1st drive...

What was the mileage put on your car during prep, and what was your average MPG shown in the on-board computer after a few miles?

After very close to 5 miles of my easy driving, short shifting, keeping revs under 4K, [breaking it in], I toggle the display and notice odo miles are a bit over 13, and see average MPG... is 13 & change. I right away say "that can't be right", but within seconds come to the only conclusion I could draw. I'm a tad perturbed right now...

What's your experience? Should I pursue this @ the dealership, concerned about how the engine will "age"?

I wouldn't worry about it. The mileage on my odometer at pick up was 2 and I like you was averaging low teens for MPG for the first half tank or so, now over 500 miles on mostly city driving and my MPG is 22. I've never had so much fun in my life, are you enjoying it as much as I am?

So are you saying the kid prepping it wasn't beating on my un-broken-in car for the 8 miles he drove it... (that's what I was implying) ....Hmm.

Re: "how's it going"... In short, I'm going way way too fast everywhere! Being about 800+ lbs lighter than the other cars I'm so used to, which are also rear drive w/5-link susp., is taking some to get used to. What a different "feel". But I am finding I'm easily taking turns 5 mile-per-hour faster w/o stress than the car I spent $5.5K on its suspension to go that fast when I push it!

I'm embarrassed to say, I lost it taking a turn way way too hot within the 1st mile of ownership [!!!] and almost took down a "caution ahead" sign while sliding sideways from the 1st leg of the "S" turn... [I think the new tires non-scuffed have a lot to do with it] There was just no resistance as I started to turn-in so didn't think I needed those brakes! The electronic nannies let it go real far. I'll be leaving them on until I get to know the limits for a while.

Yep I turned it to 'DTC' mode for a little bit last Thursday when I picked it up, haven't had a chance to test the EDLC at all. So far it's been all I can do to learn how to handle it with DSC on and in Sport mode, the burble and popping is addictive isn't it? Somebody mentioned it in another thread but the exhaust really comes to life when you hit the sport button. My fiance who had never driven anything more powerful than a manual 94 base Jetta is absolutely loving this and regularly starts giggling randomly on the road when she hears the exhaust or when she puts her foot down on the highway. The acceleration the car has even in 6th is astonishing.

I'm jealous. And it sounds like you new JCW owners need some suspension mods ASAP (swaybar at least..coilovers too maybe). They don't like the stock suspension elsewhere. Don't stack the car up on the street!

Every new car I have ever gotten has had between 6-15 miles on the odo. Remember that you car is given a quality test drive at the factory, good for 1-2 miles if they had to tighten anything up. It is then driven up on a car carrier, off that car carrier at the port of embarkation. Driven to different points at the pier until it gets to the point of loading, then driven on the ship and into its bunk bed for the ride over. Driven off the ship at another port. Driven around the VDC for inspections and rechecks. Driven onto another car carrier. Off at your dealership. Pre-delivery inspection by the mechanic. Then moved around the lot before delivery.

8 miles aint bad. Alot of time is spent idling while checks are being done as well which would account for the low MPG.

Don't stress too bad.

My JCW had 2 miles on the odometer at delivery. I asked that nobody drive the car before I picked it up as a condition of purchase. The car was delivered to the dealer with 1 mile on the odometer (I came to see it when it was delivered). The additional mileage came from the f and i guy who drove it to put fuel in it. Not even the tech got the chance to road test the car.I never pay attention to on board computers when a car is first delivered. The car has been sitting and running. Hardly a real world reflection of mpg. I re-set mine before I drove off the lot. First 250 miles @29 mpg, second 300 miles with moderate play and about 1/3 highway use 32.2 as of last evening. I'm trying hard to be nice for the first 1000 miles but I'm pushing it a little bit.
