fuel gauge question

I have a 2018 Countryman JCW All 4. I have noticed the fuel gauge seems to drop in increments rather than gradually dropping as fuel is used. Is this the way the fuel gauge is supposed to function?

My SE All4 has LEDs for the gauge (no analog). So I can imagine the software just moves the needle in increments as if it were discrete increments like the LEDs. That saves a few bucks per vehicle.

If you don't like that you can use the miles until empty function in the cluster.

Yeah, but I find the fuel gauge accuracy to be suspect. With a 16 gallon tank I was hoping that it was reading "approximately" 2 gallons per LED segment since there's 8 of them but I've had hit or miss results. With one fill-up I had over 180 miles roll by and the gauge was completely lit up, still showed full and didn't drop until I had broken nearly 200 miles -- then all of a sudden it was two segments down.

And BELIEVE the miles until empty -- that bit of data is far more accurate than my 2011 ever was.

I don't know why MINI cheaps out on the gas gauges, it's a premium car after all. I have a Volvo who's gas gauge is marked out in gallons left and it's accurate! MINI could do that if they wanted.

The MINI Connected app on my iPhone apparently is more accurate than the gauge... while the gauge reads half right now (~8 gallons), the app tells me that there are 7 gallons in the tank. But for sure it's a pain to fish out the phone to find that out, and I agree that it would be better if there were a truly accurate and detailed reading somewhere in the instrument display panel.

Thanks. One would hope that in an expensive car they would use a more accurate system.

Thanks for the info. CRAZY! I experienced the same thing. One minute I had a full tank and suddenly it just dropped.

As well as LED lamps everywhere, especially the tail lamp housings.
