F60 Does the spoiler serve a real purpose?

I’m aware that in race cars the spoiler/stabilizer creates aerodynamic downforce that helps the tires keep their grip during cornering. My curiosity is whether in a regular car such as the Countryman this is also true. Also, maybe the spoiler helps reduce airflow resistance and gives better fuel economy? Or, maybe it’s just there to make the car look its best?

As I look at the design of the one on my countryman, it looks just for show. I'm not sure if this will actually assist the rear wheels. Spoilers help when running it fast and hard, not when driving normally and only up to freeway speeds of 70 or so. So I believe only for show.

Do not think the spoiler alone keeps the back window cleaner. The Gen1 and Gen2 MINIs are pretty similar on the back except the Gen2s have a small aerodynamic bump on each side at the top of the back pillar. This does appear to help deflect wind from curling around the back and getting on the back window better. Would assume the Gen3 cars have a similar design in place so added with a spoiler you have the best bet for a cleaner window.
