Does the spoiler serve a real purpose?

I’ve ordered my new Countryman with a spoiler. I like the spoiler's looks, but does it serve any real purpose?

Been a long time since I've read on it, but the rear stablizer is to flow the air properly to put a slight downward pressure on the back to give more grip to the wheel. Outside of that, some look good.

I’m aware that in race cars the spoiler/stabilizer creates aerodynamic downforce that helps the tires keep their grip during cornering. My curiosity is whether in a regular car such as the Countryman this is also true. Also, maybe the spoiler helps reduce airflow resistance and gives better fuel economy? Or, maybe it’s just there to make the car look its best?

As I look at the design of the one on my countryman, it looks just for show. I'm not sure if this will actually assist the rear wheels. Spoilers help when running it fast and hard, not when driving normally and only up to freeway speeds of 70 or so. So I believe only for show.

I agree! (I also note that the spoiler is an extra-cost option on the Countryman, which probably indicates that BMW wants it to appeal to the buyer as something that can give the car an extra dollop of class and distinctiveness.)

Not any noticeable difference.

I think the spoiler helps to keep the rear window cleaner. I have owned several hatchbacks, and those with spoilers seem to need less cleaning of the back window.

Do not think the spoiler alone keeps the back window cleaner. The Gen1 and Gen2 MINIs are pretty similar on the back except the Gen2s have a small aerodynamic bump on each side at the top of the back pillar. This does appear to help deflect wind from curling around the back and getting on the back window better. Would assume the Gen3 cars have a similar design in place so added with a spoiler you have the best bet for a cleaner window.
