Does the slot in map pocket have a purpose?

I just noticed that the map pockets in the doors on my 2011 MINI have an interesting slot moulded into them. Does it have a purpose?

It's been asked before and I'm not sure if anyone had a good answer...

I can't find the thread, but I read that it reduced wind noise when you ride with the doors open.

Ha... Very funny.

It makes sense that it's for storing some item like the antenna, which might be useful at a car wash.

Funny? I only have the one antenna. Was there an upgrade? *G*

This came up when the '07s rolled out. My guess was limited to a two things. But, they were still just guesses. 1) Planned, but failed before offered, accessory that would have been stored there. (25% odds) 2) Molding feature to increase structural integrity. (75% odds)

Since the crease is still there in later models... I am going with 2.

Anybody got change for my $0.02

A CD case fits almost perfectly in there.

Love it!!!! Now if they could add them to the roof rack to reduce the noise it would be golden.

Wait...you acctually put stuff down there? I don't because it all slides around making a bunch of noise and just makes the inside of the car look trashing as hell.

I think hbr might have meant windows????

My second guess would be actual folded paper maps as well, but of course no one uses those anymore, right?

My thoughts as well, but I liked that someone would care about wind noise if they're driving with the doors open!

When my Nav is not being helpful, yeah paper starts to make sense.

Sheesh - I thought everyone knew that those are fondue fork holders....

You don't want your fondue forks sliding around when cornering and spearing into your thigh.

+1 re: mini umbrellas, the hanging loop can be made to rest through that slot...

but actually I still don't think that's it.

My original guess what that this would be for parking stubs? But no.

Serious idea 1: it's a reinforcing rib that connects the bottom of the pocket, the back face and the top surface behind the pocket to stiffen them against each other and so stop them vibrating at certain frequencies.
