Rear Fog Lights - seem to be there...

Question - I didn't plunk down the $100 for the rear fog lights when I built out my F56 2DR S, I expected the car to have blank panels in place of the light lenses (this is how it was on my 07 MCS R56)... but lo and behold - I've lenses and when I peer into them, it appears that there are bulbs in there...

Might this be a case (similar to the Sat radio) where they install them in all but you've just got to pay to have them enabled (well, to have that extra button installed in the dash).

I've not quite gotten adventurous enough to remove the heat shield/valence to do the "replace burnt out bulb" procedure to see if they are *really* in there...

Anyone know if I can buy a button, wire it up, and then get it coded (if needed) to enable my rear fogs?

Thanks in advance!

- Will

If you have auto lights and LED head lights you need this light switch/module. Part number 61319390255. Then you'll need someone to code it for you. The bulbs and wiring are already in place. But, be aware, if your dealer does a software update on your car you will lose the coding.

I looked into purchasing all the needed stuff to wire this to the factory harness but decided to just hardwire them. There are already bulbs and a factory harness connected to them and all I did was cut the rear fog light harness and tap them into the lights on the rear plastic trim.

Might I ask how you did that? Any pics of the install?

I didn't take any but each rear fog light has two wires coming off the plug (black/ground brown/power) I then took those wires from the factory rear fog light harness thats pre installed and wired it to the wires on the rear trim light.

so now it's on everytime with the tails...they seem pretty bright. i've turned them on and had people complain during non-foggy days.

They are the same brightness as the brake lights. That's why they shouldn't be on all the time. You could wire them into the brake light circuit, but I would prefer to have them function as rear fogs when needed. I have the correct switch in mine, but need to have them coded again.

You can also put in lower wattage bulbs. So many choices!

but then we're eliminating it's original purpose...as rear fogs....which i guess for some that means nothing if they don't run into that. personally, i've had to realistically use it about a half-dozen times when weather got real bad.

for all this work seems the original buying the module seemed so much easier than hacking all this up.

All that's needed is a new switch and some programming, right?

HAHAHAH I knew there would be a thread on this. First wash a few weeks ago and I was blinded by reflections. I knew it! They probably save a lot by doing it this way.

I've got the Sport Package, so I assume you all do, too.

Has anyone explored the option of having the dealer do it for you? It's almost like I'd appreciate it as a gift from MINI.

My dealer wouldn't do it for me. I installed the correct switch, but since the VIN didn't specify the option they couldn't/wouldn't program it. I had it coded along with a bunch of other stuff at the Helix tent at MOTD last year. Subsequently lost the programming when I upgraded to the JCW BBK the following month. Guess I'll have it done again this year. Only 54 days to go!

That's a bummer. I'm going to inquire at my dealer, just to see what they say. Considering I have a '17 S with the Sport Package, I can't imagine they've been asked this question too many times, but I'll report back.

So who has done the switch and coding?

I did the switch to activate the rears and added the OEM switch. Now I am having issues with the fronts. Please see my post below and chime in with what you do to control your front fogs now that you have the new switch installed. Thanks
