B46 Engine or...

Was wondering how to tell which engine I have in my 2016 Mini S, 4 dr, automatic. Looking to do the NM Power Module but there are some posts stating that NM doesn't recommend it with the B46 engine. (Or have the issues been resolved.)

My engine is a b46, as long as you run it on low, it works great.

Most of the guys running the NM on the B46 use the low setting w/o any issues. All seem to report excellent performance and big improvement over stock.

Lots of threads discussing the NM vs. the Burger and settings/octane/ethanol/E85, etc.

I opted for the JCW tune through MINI. I am quite satisfied w/ the result (although way more expensive than either the NM or Burger), it comes w/ a full warranty and a very nice exhaust.

In the next year, I plan to double up the jcw kit with the NM. Gotta be honest, a lot of it is to have my car be marked a jcw. 😝

NM Module works and AFIK has always worked well with the B46. I've been running mine since a week after buying the car 9/15. I ran it on high with 93 octanes with good results. After installing the JCW Pro Tuning Kit I had to drop it back to low because the high setting was actually causing the engine to cut back on boost. I haven't tested it ye. but I believe if I use 100+ octane I can go back to the high setting.

I like all the JCW appointments also.

I left the "S" on the rear boot, but did a grille swap and side markers w/ the JCW logos. Also added the scuttles and mirror caps too.

Next Mini will likely be a full JCW. I like the looks but can do w/o all the suspension and brake upgrades since I'll never track the car. I also prefer the front fascia of the S to the JCW. I had my brake ducts painted Chili Red and I think it really makes the front end pop.

My only concern about going w/ a full JCW is finding it not having the straight line pep my S has w/ the JCW tune. The tune actually provides better torque (which is where acceleration comes from) than the stock JCW.

I'd like to see the 2018 F56 JCW produce the numbers of the 2017 JCW Clubman. I'd then have zero reservations of trading up.

B48 first year F series and all F JCW. B46 other years. Double check with vin bimmer.work

Take a look at Dinans module, works on both engines.

FWIW, I have a B46 with Dinan's, and it's fine on pump 93 octane and +4psi (highest Dinan setting).

Does anyone know the differences between these two engines?

b46 is the lower emission with a slightly different turbo and supposedly slightly better MPG than the b48.

Same basic architecture. In BMW's, they are tuning and changing compression to get more HP, as is the case with MINI JCW.

Basically, for all essential components, same wine/different label.

Thanks for your reply. The technology of these engines is very interesting. I have almost 40,000 miles on my '15s auto and the engine has not used a drop of oil and gets excellent fuel economy ( unless I am really enjoying the car).
I am contemplating buying a new JCW. Does the JCW have a version of the b46 engine?

more expensive ? you say it yourselve - the exhaust solo 1.300,-- is included so for 300 more (I bought complete kit for 1.600) i have warranty and with my open 200 cell downpipe around 230 HP - if i want it faster I press the BC-Button and choose my Burger map

Only mentioned it as way more expensive for those paying dealer MSRP. My dealer price matched. I found the kit on-line for around $1600-$1800 (can't remember exactly now)....which I thought was fair considering the full warranty coverage, badging, and BT exhaust.
