Anyone replaced a transmission?

I have come to the conclusion that the transmission in my B38 F55 is very close to giving out completely and needs to be replaced. I am aiming to get a used automatic and install it but have not seen any examples of similar work done online. It would be nice to rebuild any suspect components on the new transmission before it goes in as well. If anyone has pointers that would be appreciated.

How many miles do you have and why you think it's going out?

Just over 70k miles. Gears won’t engage anymore but all electrical and computer functions for the transmission work fine. It tries to engage but fails to transfer power to the ground and has a metallic pinging/grinding sound. No associated codes other than a code for the transmission module not being coded to the car, however it has been like that for 4 years at this point without issue. Changed the fluid recently and there were no metallic particles suspended in the fluid.

All these factors lead me to believe a new transmission is necessary which is incredibly expensive unfortunately.

Not much on the newer auto transmissions. You cannot replace much of the internals.

You can get the pan and their is no filter now. We have the pan in aftermarket options. You Just change the fluid.

Transmission Fluid Change:

And parts needed.

I have not seen many places selling parts needed for a rebuild so it seems the only course of action is to buy a decent used unit.

Yes, no internals for that new transmission.

These are all the parts you can get:

and

Coding

Found a used transmission for a decent price that I am contemplating buying. Does anyone know what would be required to code the transmission to the car?

Picked up a used 47k mile transmission from a parts broker, hopefully it will work but I’ll see once I get to the install. I do believe I am the first 3rd gen owner on the forum to have an automatic transmission failure.

Is it possible your 3 cylinder was tuned? I also have not heard of a 3 cylinder transmission failure on Facebook, here at NAM, or MINF56.com. Plewase keep us up to date!

I am fairly confident it is not tuned but to tell the truth I have not checked. I am suspecting it’s an internal leak in the transmission since it seems to slip out due to a lack of pressure keeping the gears together when torque increases past a certain threshold, but only in certain gears eg. 5th and 6th. Unfortunately there are no internal rebuild kits for this transmission from what I have seen. It’s possible the TCU has faulty programming because, compared to another 3rd gen automatic I drove, mine is far more coarse and aggressively vibrating than the car at the dealership. It may also explain why my average mpg was 18mpg, a value I thought was normal for the way I drive lol.

Got a second opinion on the transmission issue. Shop suggested it may be the passenger side axle slipping out of the transmission spline. They showed me a picture of the axle displaced a few inches toward the wheel. If the transmission splines are damaged it will call for a replacement trans anyway. In the meantime the car still works with 250ml of liqui moly atf additive in the transmission (overfilled).

Similar situation now

Was wondering how much info you were able to find on swapping the transmission in an f56? Im going through a similar situation where my clutch is slipping in my automatic at 112k miles. I need help sourcing a transmission, and about how much was spent?
