Hello,
You would have to tap into the stock wires and then run a crossover for the tweeters as the stock system does not have those. Also there is no dedicated line for output and sound is lower than the stock H/K.
You could flip all the speakers over to H/K but there is no upgrade system with wires, as the main harness and everything would have to be replaced, in the future we may have aftermarket system to upgrade from the base system.

You can buy some nice component door speaker replacements with tweeters. Add an amp and a Digital Sound Processor and if you feel you want big sound a 10" sub in the back. HK isn't anything special imo. Check out parts express dot com or other online vendors. I used BavSound speakers, but after much thought I realized I overspent and would have been better off elsewhere.

But how does that work though? I'm not much of an audio guy so not sure how the current stock speakers connect, or if a component speaker can be used without tweeters? Are amps big? I don't want to lose precious space. Will any aftermarket fit or would I need some special bracket or something?

My F55 is a non-HK set up. In my case, my left speaker is going out, so I'm doing initial search on if there's a decent aftermarket speaker I can throw on there for relatively affordable price. sorry for the bombardment of questions lol

I have HK setup and switched to:
Front:Focal K1
Center/Rear: Bavsound
Subwoofers: Bavsound
Amp: Match Up 7BMW
Then, installed Bavsound front speakers to my wife's 2018 330i Non HK front. + later, added JL micro sub 8" with built-in amp.
So I'm pretty familiar with sound changes with these additional setup and my recommendations are:
1. If you like to listen music loud, keep the speakers and add an amp only.
2. If you want, more complete fulfilling sound but not listening too loud, get, Bavsound. it's only 300 (for Non-HK) and you will see some sale during Black Friday time. Bang for the bucks.
3. If you're missing base, just get external bass unit like JL Microsub+ 8". (I was pretty disappointed with Ghost Subs upgrades even after adding a Match amp).
4. If you want to be super cheap and get decent sound, just upgrade front speakers - Eton or Bavsound. (When I added front Bavdound speakers on my wife's 330i, I noticed much better sound instantly without any other upgrade)
You can stage them but 3+4 setup (or 2+4 setup) will give you the most bang for the buck setup.
