Aftermarket Head Unit?

Hey, has anybody tried this situation? Seems kinda neat for those of us without the data package.

I've seen a few posts of people doing this or similar units. I'd do it except for the potential support issues of being in China and all my prior interactions with companies incapable of proper support.

I have read that you need the factory head unit to access functions such as the locks, lighting, light ring, SPORT/GREEN mode settings, user profiles, TPMS readings, oil level (<--this is actually a big one, since there is no dipstick), scheduled service, etc... So unless someone could make an app to use on an aftermarket head unit, it may not be possible to replace it. I hope someone can figure this out because I would like an upgraded unit with Bluetooth streaming.

This is actually a bit easier done than it might appear as the actual "head unit" is installed in the guts of the car, and the piece in front is practically the faceplate, this means that it is possible to provide an interacting screen that allows passthrough information to get where it needs to go (including your eyes). There is an obvious problem though, the solution would need to be a custom application for the F56 MINI designed by someone with a lot of knowledge of the interface, therefore, it gets a bit iffy if it will ever happen, as I don't think the demand would warrant the investment on their part anyway. :(
