A wastegate is completely different from a blow off valve/ diverter valve.
a wastegate diverts exhaust pressure around the turbine wheel to control boost.
a blow off valve/diverter valve is in the cold side/charge pipe of the intake side. Its sole purpose is to divert excess intake pressure to prevent compressor surge. A blow off valve vents that pressure to the atmosphere and a diverter valve recirculates that pressure back into the intake path.
bmw has a history of diverter valves causing boost issues (n54 and n55). In the B series engines they eliminated the need for using diverter valved and they use vanos to open the intake and exhaust valves at the same time to bleed off pressure. When they do this it increases exhaust pressure so the wastegate on the turbo cracks open briefly to prevent boost building.
even on a stock b48 you can induce compressor surge. On a tuned engine due to the increased boost you can hear the compressor surge even more. Based off durability testing they didnt observe the need to add a diverter valve. This also saves them money on production of the engines because of removing components and hoses.

if you want the blow off valve sound the closes you will get is to purchase an intake. An exhaust is just going to make your car louder and will not give you the "psssh" sound of a blow off valve

Any straight through muffler will increase the "Vanos" compression dump, and waste gate through the exhaust. That sound to me is more GTR...
Its so cool when the upshift coincides with me passing a Challenger, or Camaro!!

The BOV hiss, in my eyes/ears says Honda Civic.

TVPostSound - all turbos have a wastegates. BMW choose a design that doesn't use a diverter valve or blow off valve. Most other car manufacturers with turbo cars (with wastegates) also use diverter vales.
F56newbie, if you want blow off type sounds just get an open filter intake. It will be plenty loud! An exhaust will not give you the sound you are looking for.

To me that sound says Turbo more than a BOV.

Researched long ago, even opened a post here.
Conclusion is you dont need one in terms of performance. If you purely want one for PSSSSSS noise, get universal HKS BOV, find some people to make a custom bracket/adapter, put it in between the charge pipe and intake manifold. It has been done before by few people, at least one posted here, and chinese sells the whole kit through chinese ebay which comes with HKS BOV and the bracket, just not sure if the BOV is genuine HK.

Yes, I have seen people do the noise marker mod, but yes no factory set up so no forge BOV or anything like that.
