Mini Recalled for Crankshaft bearings

So my April 2015 build cooper s has just been recalled for the Crank Bearing issue. Just got the call from Mini of Kennesaw, car goes in next monday. My first cooper s was bought back for repeated symptoms of this issue last year.

Not too worried but glad that mini is taking the initiative on these issues and not waiting for engine failures like bmw has done in the past.

ill let the group know the outcome next week. As i understand it, if they find metal in the oil its new engine time.

Car as 7500 miles on it...

Wow, thought the mfg cut off was like February 2015 for that issue. Mine was a May 10 build. Hope to avoid that issue (further hope the design change they instituted solved the problem)... not that getting a new motor is a bad thing.......

Not a big deal, other than having to go through a break-in period again. They also inspect the crank bearing surface for unusual wear. On mine you could run your fingernail down the bearing journal and feel grooves cut in the surface. Got a new motor with

Is yours an automatic? I haven't heard of any autos being recalled. Your dealer should be able to tell you from either reading your key or by VIN.

From everything I've found on this problem is that it's caused by the longitudinal force applied to the crankshaft every time the clutch is engaged/disengaged. You don't have that problem with an auto box.

Lucila said it is an A/T.

Everybody with this issue should have a new engine and not a rebuilt period.

"Should" or "will"?
I'm on board with "should" ... but I have my doubts about "will".

I got a new motor. There was never a mention of a rebuilt motor.

Hey there gang it will now be all 2015 F56 and F55 manuals that are part of the recall. The ere will be an inspection of the CS bearings first and if wear is detected, then a new motor could be in your future. If not, then the bearings will be replaced with the new design. Either way you should contact your dealer and check in with them.

Dropped off my 2015 F55 with 3,000mi at the dealer this morning. They've replaced the bearings, no new engine needed. Crossing fingers that BMW actually fixed the problem.

I am good on mine. I have 3K on the new bearings so far.

Are there any actual symptoms that would be noticed while driving?

Holy crap! I am supposed to take my car in for the first service so I should ask the dealer about that. Thanks for the heads-up!

I had my engine replaced before the recall. When I took turns and shifted in the middle of the turn I felt a change in pressure on my clutch. Also noticed difficulty shifting into gears. Once or twice I stopped abruptly and could not get into first. 2015 MCS

Mine showed no symptoms at all. I had it at the dealer for an unrelated problem and they saw the recall when they scanned my key fob. I had about 10K miles on it at the time. When they inspected it they found grooves worn in the crankshaft bearing surface that you could feel with your fingertip. Drove a loaner home and had a brand new motor around 10 days later. No complaints since, other than having to go through a break-in period. 18K now.

So, the serial number of the new engine doesn't match anymore the production number of the car.

This will become a red flag for the next buyer no matter it has been done under warranty.

Maybe 50 years from now someone might care about a matching number, but I doubt it. I don't think they have matching serial numbers anyway any more. The days are gone where they stamp all major parts with matching numbers. Also, having a motor with 10K less miles on it than the car is not going to be a deal breaker IMO. This has been talked about ad nausium in other threads on this forum.

I passed on a replaced engine car. Would only buy if price was significantly lower and they CPO it. Dealer did not want to do that.

I just picked up my car from the dealer today and they said there was no recall on mine. Mine was built in Nov 2015...

I dropped mine off yesterday, got the call today that they are going to replace the whole engine. Thankfully they have the engine in stock so should have my car back by the end of the week.

I read where people say their cars aren't the same after. I've only had it a week so hopefully I won't notice

11K miles on my new engine and not a hiccup. No complaints here.
