Got a massive crack working its way up my windshield from a rock that got me last week. I'm scheduled to get it replaced (fully covered by insurance) tomorrow. Has anyone else had their windshield replaced yet? I have a 2014 MCS. I don't have the auto-dim mirror. I found it interesting that one of the questions asked by the insurance company was "do I have heated seats?" I have no idea how that relates to the windshield.
My concern is whether if the new windshield will be equal to the one that came with the car, as far as the features and quality. For all I know, the company replacing it may have to get it from Mini.
Assuming you are having an aftermarket company perform this task. They will also have to purchase/install the following from MINI. ( I only have mine done at the dealer since they have all the clips needed sometimes, but to each their own )
Job cannot be done without them.
51-31-7-404-771 COVER, WINDS
51-47-7-376-029 SOUND INSULA
On the upside, the A pillar covers don't break anymore
Yes. Safelite will be doing the installation. They have done windshields on some of my other cars over the years without any issues. At the end of the day, that is the company that works with my insurance.
Make sure you get someone who has done a MINI before, i used safelite and they have a guy that does MINIs , fixed it right. Had it done also by a non MINI guys and they busted the a piliiar which i pointed out.
those are the upper and lower seals, most aftermarket windows come with them for gen 1 and gen 2 when they call up a repair order at SLG , but since this is anew MINI they might not have them, get OEM glass or PPG if available. they held up better then so SLG branded ones.
i had the w/ windshield sensor replaced also, the new glass for the gen 2 MINI comes with the ones side of the sensor , they remove the other side and it pops in , on Gen 3 it might be the same. i know they have issue with the gel packs. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...in-1-week.html

I had to have my windshield replaced. MINI are the only ones who have the F56 windshield: no one else is making them. So whoever does your windshield will have to get it from MINI.
Note I tried a couple of third party windshield replacers. They both brought the wrong windshield with them. They wanted to charge me a lot more once they figured out they had to get a MINI windshield. ( I was paying this out of pocket.) I ended up having the windshield replaced by MINI.
MINI actually used a third party company to do the replacement using a MINI windshield. The third party company broke a trim piece and I had a lot of wind noise. I brought the car back to get it fixed.
Forgot to mention: one of the questions I was asked was if I had a heated windshield. Not on an F56 but maybe prior windshields? I suspect this was the question asked and not heated seats.
Safelight is such a ripoff!
I get that you don't care since you're insurance is covering it, but if you price around you'll see they're hundreds more than other places. They advertise like crazy on TV and radio, so when people need a windshield, they just go straight to them.
And for most people it is covered or they just pay their deductible so they don't care. Call and ask around for pricing and first thing they ask is "cash or insurance?"
To me, this is insurance fraud but what do I know. My sister used to work for PPG and she got me a windshield for my 2012 VW Golf for like $70. Safelight wanted like $600 for glass and install.
Good point Greg. I have mandatory glass insurance. Dealer cost was same or less than aftermarket install, and they have the clips if needed, and don't forget to put the foam backing back into the A pillars like the other places do creating excessive wind noise and allowing water to enter compartment area....

Took my Mini in for the windshield replacement on Friday and it turns out that they had ordered the wrong windshield. So based on what your are saying, it seems that they may have had to go to Mini to get it. The rep on the phone said that she had to use the VIN to make sure they got the right part(s). I'm scheduled to go back again on Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, the crack is making steady progress up the glass.
I'm still on the original windshield, but dang, the angle is such that it is a magnet for debris, meaning tons and tons of little dings that make driving into the sun not much fun. I'm thinking about going with a new one, but know that within a short couple of months of driving on the freeway the windshield will again start looking crappy. My wife's sharper angled windshield in her car doesn't look anywhere near as bad as mine, and she has 4X the mileage that I do. :(
My windshield is horribly pitted now, so the new windshield will be quite welcome. The upright position + low to the ground = lots of abuse from sand, rocks, etc.
New windshield is finally installed. Only took three tries to get the right part. The good news is that it is a Mini factory windshield. No issues so far. It rained the next day, so I got a chance to see if there were any leaks or issues with the automatic wiping feature. All looks good. The best part is having a nice clear windshield again. I hated seeing all of the pits when I was driving home into the sunset.
