Upgrading wheels, what to do with the OEMs?

I'm not a car person so this is probably a dumb question, but within a month or so of taking delivery of my new ride, I plan on swapping the 15" OEM wheels with new 17" and some nice grand touring tires.

That leaves me with four almost new wheels and tires and I feel like I should do something with them other than throw them away. I'd like to try and offload them to recoup a bit of the cost of buying new wheels, but I'm not very connected with car culture so I don't know where to look. Are there stores online that buy like-new wheels and tires? Do I just post on craigslist to see if someone buys them? Can they be used on other cars than MINIs so I have a wider market of potential buyers?

Craig's list

post them on Craigs List and in the for sale area of this site. Be specic as to what they are and include pictures. I've sold several sets that way.

Any thoughts on how to determine a fair price? I'll probably be lowballed and have no clue that I could get more.

Check the marketplace on this site for an idea on prices. Do you get freezing weather and snow where you live? If so, why not keep the wheels and sell just the tires? Then get snow tires for the OEM wheels?

I'm in Texas so no need, and I'll be going up 2" in size as well.

Also, my last set of wheels and tires I got from Tire Rack. they mount and balance free when you buy wheels and tires together, or at least they did at the time.

I'm planning on going through them. I was wondering if the mount and balance works when transferring TPMS, as I don't really want to buy a whole new set but I don't know how they're installed.

The market for those wheels will be almost bill...I would store them the only car that uses our hub is our car..Audi/vw are close. Also if you want hub centric rims NM is the only choice. I have looked a lot over the past two weeks..not a lot of good options :(

stored mine

I just upgraded as well, but I stored my OEMs for winter use, and for lease turn-in. There doesn't seem to be much of a used market for them yet.

Your best option for tpms is to take them out of your current wheels and save them once you've used up those tires. If you get mount and balance before you receive the new wheels and tires, get standard valve stems and ignore your tpms indicator. Once the new tires are used and ready for a new set, put the tpms sensors in at that time. That's exactly what I'm doing right now.

Personally, if you have the room, store them.

Eventually you will sell/trade the car. You can opt to put the stock wheels back on the car when you trade and either use the upgraded wheels on your new Mini or sell them separately if you decide to go a different route.

The 17"s will likely get you a higher price on the secondary market than the stock wheels and should garner more interest for buyers.

If you don't have the room. Craig's list and advertise for local pickup.

Are you leasing? Are the originals runflats?

Most leases require you return the car with OE spec tires.

It's common for leasees when ditching the runflats to store them so they can put them back on when returning the car. This saves a near $1000 purchase at the end of the lease.

Do any new Mini's with 15" OE wheels come with runflat tires? I think the runflats come only with the 16" and bigger wheels.

I just sold my OE 17" Hankook runflats because I didn't want to store them - now I wish I'd kept them to avoid any future trade-in controversies. But I think there's a strong chance that the OP's 15" tires are not runflats.

No, and the runflat issue won't apply to the OP. I don't think anybody even makes runflat tires for 15" wheels.

Keep them. When it comes time to sell the car you'll be glad you have the stock wheels to put back on so you can sell your aftermarket wheels separately. You'll be lucky to get enough money out of them to cover the cost of a set of tires if you sell them.

I've tried to sell my OEM wheels and no one wants them. I am considering researching if my wife's Audi can accept them. If so it will be easier to sell her used wheels than the Mini ones, and I'll just swap out the center caps.

Audi has a 66.56 hub usually listed as a 66.6....f56 has a 66.5 hub which is to small...Audi wheels fit ours but not the other way around.
