JCW Heads Up Display With Rev Lights + Gear Indicator?

Thought I read somewhere that the heads up display is not available in the JCW because you have to take the gauges shown in the car show example in Detroit.

But the article below says the optional heads up display has been customized for the JCW with rev lights and a gear-indicator. Cool, if true. Or maybe we can't get it here in the states? Anyone know?

You're right, the Motoringfile article showed the 3 guages in front of the driver where the HUD goes in the hatchback (oil temp, boost and a timer I think). I bet you can't get the HUD unless those 3 guages are optional. I personally wouldn't want them in front of me. To have the HUD be worth anything you need the Nav too. Otherwise all it shows is the speed and temperature and radio station which is worthless.

We have the factory HUD in our X5. While it's nice to have the HUD display everything else you mentioned, by far what I use most frequently is the speedo reading (guess that's not a surprise). I'd pay $500 just for that.

No HUD and gauges are standard.

Option 1. Is Gauges

Option 2. Is HUD

There is no option to have Gauges and HUD.

Hope this helps.

Where did you obtain this info? Not saying you are wrong (in fact, I suspect your are correct), but it sounds like you have a source for more info on the car, and I'm very interested in ordering one.

White Roof Radio said the gauges are an option and a previous press release said how the HUD will be different for the JCW.

I've been following the JCW for a while as I'm very interested in it myself.

Tell your dealer you are interested and you might even be able to place a deposit for one of the earlier production slots. If MINI follows their schedule deliveries will be toward the end of March. Although with MINI's current track record with vehicle release dates (they are usually delayed), it could be pushed back. But regardless, speak with your dealer and express your interest.

It's an either/or proposition - HUD or gauges (or neither).

"The option that a lot of you will be talking about are the JCW gauge cluster that takes the place of the also option heads-up display. The gauges are (from left to right) oil pressure, boost and a stop-watch. While we love the idea it’s worth mentioning that the gauges very slightly impede on visibility near the top of the hood and also make it impossible to opt for the optional heads-up display."

I know that this thread is about the John Cooper Works model gauges vs HUD, but I wanted to also comment that I LOVE the HUD in my Cooper S. I use it mainly for Speed as well, but it is also super useful with the Cruise control on and also for seeing other information (song tracks, bluetooth/phone data, etc) when you are in a different main screen. For example, if I have the USB/iPhone data showing (song title and track along with album artwork) on the main center screen, I can scroll through other tracks or see bluetooth/phone info or even interact with Siri and see the data on the HUD. I am still playing around with all the gadgets, but I am scared I may never be able to be without HUD again!

As a side note, be sure to order your MINI (or make sure it is equipped with) ENHANCED BLUETOOTH, it is not standard with the Visual Boost radio or Visual Boost with Nav setup - only standard with Navigation XL. This is the ONLY way to get voice commands in your MINI. That feature has been improved greatly from the past and is much more interactive. The voice button on the steering wheel will also call up Siri on an iPhone that is connected via Bluetooth in the vehicle. Very slick.

Thanks, been a Mini owner for 12 years and never heard of White Roof. Just listened to their most recent cast and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thanks for the tip. I was confused about that.

Nice, I go back and forth with the HUD, I wish they did have a boost gage though.

I can tell how fast I'm going and the temperature outside from the tachometer right in front of me. I really don't need to see it any more than that. I'm sure the HUD is a nice feature. It was one of the "new for the F56" features I was interested in and probably would have ordered, but I would have gotten it with the Nav. Other "new" things I like are the backup camera and the LED headlights. But my BiXenon lights really rock compared to my old xenons.

Yes, but once you get used to having your speed constantly right in your field of view, don't be surprised if you want it on future cars. Before I had it, I thought it was just another needless gadget waiting to break, but now I have to admit I miss it when I drive another car.

I guess I just don't know what I'm missing lol. I drove a rental car with it, but it was projected on the windshield which was pretty cool. As I recall I turned it off though.

That is not true - enhanced bluetooth and voice commands are standard with visual boost and above - same with 2011+ 2nd gen MINIs. I've played with it on F56/F55s with VB and with XL.

Depends on the car I guess... The MINIs are nice because they use a full color screen and are capable of displaying all sorts of information in addition to the speed.

However, some other cars either use lower res screens, or monochrome, like the Mazda 3, or don't show much more info than the current speed.

I'm sold on the HUD in the F5X!

Sorry, but you are very incorrect about that statement. I have actually researched this fact quite a bit with MINI product representatives. If you have "played with it" on F56/F55 Visual Boost equipped vehicles (NOT XL - which is standard), then those vehicles were ALSO equipped with the Enhanced Bluetooth option or the option MEDIA PACKAGE. VOICE COMMAND IS NOT STANDARD WITH VISUAL BOOST OR VISUAL BOOST WITH NAV. It is only standard with Media Package or Navigation XL.

I don't mean to make a big issue out of this, but I wanted to make it known so others don't miss out on this feature. My friend has a 2015 F55 Cooper S Hardtop. The vehicle was $36K with Premium package, leather, Visual Boost, Navigation, Center armrest, Backup Camera, PDC, 18" Vanity Spoke wheels and more. However, the vehicle DOES NOT HAVE voice commands. Naturally, he was pretty upset about that (finding out after the fact, when during delivery the feature did not work) and investigated with MINI Corporate. His vehicle was not coded for Enhanced Bluetooth and the voice command module is absent because his build was missing the "media package" option and/or the "enhanced Bluetooth" option.

During his frustration, we researched as many F56/F55 vehicles on dealer lots. We found a few Visual Boost vehicles that had no Nav but did have voice commands, but the majority of vehicles with Visual Boost (with and without Nav) did not have any voice command control at all. A serious oversight by those dealers ordering vehicles.

It's not the end of the world, but it is a cool feature and works much better than in my 2012 BMW.

Just a friendly FYI.

I double checked the dependencies and you are correct! I was wrong.

It seems that if your dealer orders a car with just the Visual Boost option and not the Media package (which BTW, I have no idea why they would do this, as it's a $250 difference but you get the armrest which most people want anyway and you get the Enhanced Bluetooth), you will not get 6NE.

I checked with my dealer and they plain just will not order cars with Visual Boost by itself - they always order the Media package, so I made the incorrect assumption that it was standard with the VB. Also, with the RXX models, the center armrest and 6NE were always bundled with Connected, adding to my confusion.

It sounds like some dealers are definitely not paying close enough attention to the packages when ordering...

Sorry!

No need to apologize - wasn't trying to call you out, just wanted to make sure that the facts were clear. Here in Southern CA there seems to be a lot of dealers ordering in pieces to save money but in the end jeopardizing customer satisfaction (in my opinion). Why you would not order the Media Package is beyond me, but trust me, plenty do. My friend's F55 has Visual Boost and Center armrest as stand alone options totaling $750 (VB $500 + Armrest $250) and the Media Package is $750.00. The difference is that MP comes with 6NE Enhanced Bluetooth which includes center armrest connection and voice command control - essentially FOR FREE! MINI really shouldn't even have it set up like that, but I guess some folks may not want the center armrest. Crazy!

That is indeed crazy. I don't have the Nav, but do have the media package. I don't hardly ever connect my phone via BT but I'd be pissed if I didn't have it.

That is the JCW exclusive speedo, so guessing that's the correct HUD for the JCW.

Looks cool...one has to wonder if you can use E-SYS to put it on the non-JCW F56...

[QUOTE=shark715;4036138]Thought I read somewhere that the heads up display is not available in the JCW because you have to take the gauges shown in the car show example in Detroit.

In the article on MotorFile JCW details, they say in the article that both, the HUD and the 3-gauge unit are options, actually the gauges can be part of a Chrono Package. Can't get both, one or the other and neither is standard.

While investigating more about the HUD, I got on a Scottish MINI site, I believe and they were talking about the HUD having a warning of radar in the area. I had read, somewhere that the European HUD had some different features, but this would be kind of a nice feature here, too. Unless MINIUSA is worried about some states in their radar detector laws.
