Is this going to be a poor man's BMW? I don't know if it's because the 3 cylinder, but I feel it is a bit rough sometimes. Kind of feels like riding a small motor cycle.

Looks like this will only be available in Europe to start.

My first performance car bought new was a 1971 BMW 1600. 0-60mph in 11.6 seconds. $3,600 fully loaded.

My last BMW was a 1992 525i. 0-60mph in 8.6 seconds. $27,000 with custom leather interior.

Speed is relative.

There's an entry level Mini 1 in Europe, as well as the very popular diesel. $7/gallon gas will do that to a company lol.

That 218i may take 8.8 seconds to get to 60 compared to 7.9 seconds for the same engine in the (justa) Cooper, but it's interesting to note that its top end is about 2mph quicker than the Mini, showing the benefit of a low drag coefficient in a bigger car.

Here in Europe there is indeed a Mini One below the Cooper with a 1.2 litre 102hp three-cylinder engine and then there will shortly also be a F56 Mini First below that - an even cheaper model with a very limited extras list.

It might be worth noting that the 8.8 vs 7.9 times are to 100kph (62) mph. Take about half a second off for 0-60 times.

Other 0-62mph times:
MINI One 9.9 sec
MINI One D 11.0 sec
MINI Cooper S 6.7 sec
MINI Cooper SD 7.2 sec
MINI Countryman Cooper 11.6 sec
MINI Countryman One 13.9 sec
