Try that shift without rev matching and experience the same exciting situation! Once you physically couple the tires and the engine, they WILL both spin at the same speed or fail. It's equally bad whether rev matching or not.

I had this conversation with my service manager.

I think you're a little confused with how the system works. The rev matching feature is software-based and won't attempt to spin the engine to the RPM that corresponds to 90 mph in 2nd gear.

You CAN however physically force this to occur just like you could with any manual transmission car ever made as RichSz pointed out.

Like I posted earlier some gent accidentally did the dreaded 6-2 downshift on some offramp. He wasn't going 90 lol. He did notice some sort of unpleasant reaction from the Mini. I don't think anything broke though. I bet you like rev matching on your track sessions Charlie. How did that Ninja driver you rode with like it recently?

The car ALWAYS has DSC Off, which disables the Rev Match.

When I forget to do that (which is rare) I am hugely amused at the blip that accompanies the selection of the lower gear.

And to all - beware of my odd sense of humor.

Cheers,

Charlie

My service manager left a message today. The long story short, according to him, they are all supposed to match revs going into 2nd if the speed is greater than 20mph. He's been researching this and working his way up the chain. Nobody is sure why these cars are doing this but they are investigating.

He's supposed to get back to me later in the week but I may call him tomorrow to get more details. To date, there was no mention of one guy mis-shifting, resulting in the feature being nerfed. Perhaps that'll come out later.

Just thought I would add that my 2015 MCS does not rev match in 2nd either. Taking it in on Thursday for this and a couple other things.

Ok, I can confirm that my 2014 MCS does indeed rev match going into 2nd gear when the speed is over 20 mph. I've been watching this pretty closely after reading this thread.

Probably doesn't rev match lower than 20 mph because that is about the speed you'd be doing in second at 1200 RPM (just above idle)

I guess I have to try this. I know when I tested it it was under 20. Kinda scared to dump the clutch in 2nd and find out it doesn't though!!!

The only time I've noticed not rev matching into second is this scenario. Your in in 3rd approaching a traffic turn, say a left, you push I the clutch as traffic slows so revs are down, then you are able to go so you release the clutch & the revs then jump right up which seems a bit weird compared no rev matching. Hope this makes sense.

Don't dump it
let it out smoothly
The clutch on the Mini is very forgiving and the bottom end torque
eliminates the stall.
Re-learning to drive our manual, my lady has made a few starts from dead stop in third w/o a stall.
The Mini Manual is a pleasure.

Maybe "dump the clutch" wasn't the right phrase. When I rev match a downshift, I let out the clutch much faster than I would dare if I hadn't. If I'm just slipping the clutch on a downshift then I do it slow to keep it smooth.

Can't wait to try it though! Hope this 20mph thing is true and mine will do it!

To be honest and present all the facts I have, I got a call from another service department (Dorschel) yesterday and they told me they researched it but the 2015s do not match in 2nd gear, period. I explained that Towne MINI told me the cars were supposed to. This understandably confused the Dorschel MINI guy. He will continue to look into it.

I had a strange situation this morning. I was flying down an off-ramp trying to make the light at the end. When I shifted into second to make the turn, I'm 99% positive the revs were matched. I don't remember feeling the engine braking. I was in Sport mode but perhaps I was going so fast (don't know the exact speed) that I hit some threshold. I tried to recreate it but couldn't.

Maybe I imagined it. Whatever you do, don't do anything stupid if you feel like experimenting. It's not worth messing your car up.

Anyone get a solid answer on this? I took my car in for service and told them it wasn't rev matching in 2nd. When I got it back they said it was working and all they did was update software. It's still not working.....

The ones that do only do it when you downshift above 20 mph. Does yours do this?

It's safe to go from 3rd to 2nd at 40-42 mph if you want to test your rev-matching. I do it all the time when I want to create the burble/backfire of the exhaust. If you do it smoothly your RPM *should* match around 4500. Even if you dump the clutch at this speed I doubt it would spin much over 5000.

I've tried to downshift into 2nd numerous times between 20 mph and 40 mph and it is not working. I'm also not getting any gurgle/pop noises from my exhaust in sport mode. Going back to service today.

Hi - yours is a 2015 with a B46 and those that say it works are 2014 B48 (built before July) - is this correct from what you see from this thread?

Yes, that is what I gather from this thread.

I have been discussing this issue with the head of sales and after sales of mini USA over the last couple of weeks. Today he gave me some concrete news. He said that the elimination of second gear was a mix up "between two groups overseas".

All cars currently being built will continue to have this same issue. Next spring, April-ish, during that production run the original software will be put back in place. At that time it will be made available to those of us that have cars and want it installed via a flash.

So good news is that we can get it back. Bad news is that I get to wait for something from Mini again......

Thanks mk for ferreting out some really useful information. I haven't even tried yet to see if my MC is rev-matching in 2nd. Will do soon. Did they give you the impression they will be contacting those owners affected or do we need to be proactive? Have you discussed this with Mini of Loveland?

Not sure on whether they will be proactive in telling us or if we have to request it. I figured I would take the winter off from calling mini people and check in again in April if they haven't called me first. I'll be sure to let all know if/when that happens.

I left a message for mini of Loveland so that they could stop tirelessly investigating for me. :(
