First gear problem...

so I just got my f56 s, and I got it manual but sometimes when I go from N to 1st gear and lift the clutch, the gear pops out... is this just for my mini?
when I carefully put 1st gear in than it would stay and i can change to second but for the other gears I get feelings that the gear went in fully but for the first gear it feels not stable.. for the other gears I get two feelings that feels like its locked but for the first gear it feels like its not fully went even though I do this carefully...

Still happening to me. Been trying to get it to happen on command. Sometimes if I stop then put it from neutral to 2nd 10 times then put it into first it will pop out.
At first I thought it was that I wasn't depressing the clutch fully. It is not that.
I think it is the linkages.
Make sure that your dealer opens a ticket on the issue. When there are enough complaints they will look into it.

Same issue, it feels as if it would just pop out of 1st when it doesnt go in the gear entirely.

Similar issue, sure feels like linkage related to me. I've also noticed sometimes it doesn't feel as though it goes into gear properly, so much so I go out to N and back in. The several times it has popped out were under gentle acceleration.

Have not had this issue at all in mine. Had it about a month now. That would drive me insane. Occasionally it will go into first a bit dodgy on startup but I just pump the clutch once and put it in.

It just happened again, on my way home after work.
It does tick me off whenever that happens.

While I haven't had mine pop out of gear, coming from reverse it doesn't really feel it's all the way engaged, especially compared to the other gears.

yeah... it happens every single time whenever I don't push the gear into the end.. so I'm like waiting for the gear to pop out when I forget to push the gear fully in.... it feels like hurting the car... :(

What I'm concerned about is collateral damage. The whole car jumps and it must be putting huge strain of the outer edges of the gears in the box. Will this cause some other failure in 5 years that is directly related...??

Please..... make sure you call your dealer today and have them open a ticket. That way BMW will look into the issue.

okay.. so I left my car at dealer and they couldn't get the gear pops out.. so I went again to show them and I was able to let them pop the gear out!!! and 2 days later I got call from dealer and they said they are changing the transmission... so I guess for people who are experiencing this should go to dealer asap and change your transmissions too... I left my mini for 5 days now and they said they should be able to fix everything by next thursday...
I miss my mini...

No opinion on the pop-out issue but I will say this: If you want a more positive feel to the whole shifting experience and "make sure it's not you" accidentally pulling it out of gear or something like that, just get a heavier shift ****. Makes a big difference.

Its not about the weight of shift ****. Its the matter of shifter and I have tried test drive other car and it was totally different for the first gear fitness. So if anyone is having this problem they should goto dealer not changing their shift ****.

Like I said: No opinion on the pop-out issue. If it's a sycnro issue, a shift **** obviously won't fix that. But that being said, a heavier shift **** lends much more positive overall feel to manually shifting this particular platform. It's more for the "I tend to push or pull it out of gear accidentally" crowd. Just my 2-cents as always.

Since the dealer is replacing the transmission, there MUST be a defect in the vehicle. If an operator error, at least, they would have given a lecture to the owner. Also, there is more than one poster having the exact same issue here.

Chazman. Yes why wouldn't they just adjust the linkages? Maybe it is too early in the process to do that? Maybe the training is not up to speed?...or they don't have individual parts yet. I have been waiting for a new steering wheel center/air bag for 3 months!

To answer my own question. There are no replaceable parts. There is one part number 23008617542 (just under $4k). This will be an expensive repair!
Interestingly enough....house building is going this way too....modular housing where your don't repair the toilet - you just replace the bathroom.

This is actually standard practice for lots of different manufacturing industries. I'm in manufacturing for a living (non-automotive) and will tell you that while it makes more sense for you or me (or an independent auto repair shop...) to, say, replace one set of syncros on a tranny that is popping out of gear, the dealer makes no money on that and more importantly, loses time. This is why dealerships will do things like replace worn brake discs or clutch flywheels rather than have them re-surfaced, even though re-surfacing would do just fine. Dealerships don't repair component groups, they just replace them with a new one.

Getrag probably warranties their trannies to BMW. So, BWM will file a claim with them and get credited for that. It's just faster for the dealer's techs to replace the whole tranny rather than take it apart. That's why dealerships do it this way.

Very informative. Even if i want to, BMW do not make (at present) any replacement parts anyway.

Took my car to the dealership this morning. After 3 mini's I know the head mechanic quite well. We jumped I the car I drove managed to get it to do it without leaving the lot. We drove back in and they scanned my key and opened a ticket. By the time I got to my office they service adviser called saying that the mechanic had spoken to MINI and they needed to scan the car and the transmission (get the numbers etc)...her said it is likely they will put in a new transmission!
Squeeky wheel...take your cars in. They should not do this.

Wanso. Did you get your car back yet with the new transmission?

Just over 3,000 miles on my MCS and it popped out of gear this morning for the first time.
