16" or 17" wheels?

I kind of like the 16" Silver Loop Spoke. But isn't 195/55 a little narrow? My older Accord had 205/60-16's and I always thought the width was a little narrow. Dealer near me only has 17's to test drive and view. How do the 16's look and handle?

You may be able to put a 205 on the 16".
Find the 16" wheel width then go to Tire rack and look up SPECS
on 205 tires.
It will tell you the rim width required.

Just looked,.... the 16" are 6.5 " wide
You can put a 205 on that wheel...NO Problem
You may even be able to mount some 215s
Get the wheels you like visually !!

When deciding look at Revs per mile. (specs)
Should be around 850+ that will keep you in the ballpark
for correct diameter.

205 45 17 are coming on the 17s and they rotate at 858
195 55 16 rotate at about 853
These tires should be about 24.5" tall

I chose the 16" Loops mainly because I was concerned that the 17 inchers would be rougher riding and also because I figured they would be more susceptible to wheel and tire damage. Mine came w/ Cinturatos and I see that the tread width of 205/60R16s and 205/45R17s can have about the same tread width as the 195/55s. Not sure how important tread width is to roadholding. I like the looks of the 17s wheels better than the 16s, but the overall tire diameter is the same so they fill the wheel well the same.

205 and 195 are the respective widths in MM.
10mm difference is just under 1/2 inch.

The diameter of the wheel tire combination of the 15, 16 and 17s
should remain relatively the same.
What changes is the wheel diameter and the wall height of the tire.
The tire wall height is a % of the tire width.

Yes, what you say is true.

I'd think tread width would have some relationship to the contact area.

Correct
In fact the 18" wheels are one inch wider than the 16s .
The 18s are 7.5",
which allows them to support wider tires than the 16 or 17"
wheels.
So...
16s are 6.5" wide
17s are 7"
18s are 7.5"
You can go from 195 to 225+

If you go to Tire Rack, you can get tread widths, and some of the 16s and 17s are the same or very nearly so. Whether they grip the pavement the same is another question.

The OEM F56 18" wheels are only 7" wide not 7.5"

Are there more custom options available, that don't show on the online Configurator? My local dealer had no information to give me, besides a generic sales brochure for the F56. I wish there were more black wheels to pick from. Are more options going to be added to the online configurator?

Miniusa
The Mini Configurator has them as 18 x 7.5

R99, your link is not an official BMW or Mini site.
Please check the Mini Configurator.

Also says 225/45/18 runflats, which is wrong as the 18" wheels come with 205/40/18 run flats… (I have seen the wheels / tyres in person at my local dealer)

It seems MINI USA have made several mistakes looking across these forums :(

There are some options not yet available.
In GB you can currently get white wheels.
We cannot currently access roof rails, but those are soon to be available

They are the official BMW / MINI part diagrams that I have linked to, just hosted on a 3rd party site.

I was at the local dealer yesterday trying to find out with which tires my
17" wheels would come.
Seems the brand and size is not consistent.

There is a post requesting tire brand and size of newly delivered F56,
which may be interesting to all.

Yes, 205/50-16 would the appropriate plus-size for 195/55-16.

I'm thinking of getting an F55 "S" (4 door MINI). Or maybe will go with an F56 S.

Is the ride harsher with 17 inch wheels/tires vs the standard 16 inch? Is the difference in the ride noticeable? Or is it so minimal that one barely feels the difference?

Currently have a 09 Justa so it has the non runflat 15's. I realize that runflat ride is harsher than non runflat but runflat technology has advanced and ride quality it better than it was 5 to 7 years ago.

Thanks,
Finner

Lots of folks use 205/55/16 on the MINI, partly because the slightly higher sidewall
is more comfortable, and partly because the choice of available good tires is better
than in 205/50/16 or 195/55/16.

Compared to my R55 S with 16" run flats and standard suspension, my F56 with Sports Suspension and 17" run flats is way more comfortable, in fact the F56 I first tested was an S with 18" rims and no Sports Suspension and I thought it felt too much like my dad's 5 series, it was way too 'soft' for a MINI. I took the risk of ordering one with Sports Suspension and 17" without having one to test, but in the end I'm happy with my decision. Run flat technology has really come a long way. And the Dunlop's I got on my F56 are amazing!!! I've all ready gotten two flats and have replaced them with the Dunlop's both times even though I could've easily bought a set of four Pirellis both times with the prices MINI charges!! If I was you I'd buy the wheels you like only in looks, as I've had three loaners all ready with 15",16" and 17" wheels plus the 18" I test drove and my 17" with SS and could barely feel a difference between all except mine, which feels a little closer to the second gen. albeit a little more forgiving over pot holes, bumps et cetera.

Miniman, Thanks for giving me your thoughts between 16 and 17 inch. Actually, still undecided on whether to get a new Mini. Just thinking what wheel size if I do decide to get a new one.

I have P195/55R16 Continental Conti Pro Contact runflats on my 2015 Coupe S and the ride is rough on bad highways and bad roads.

If the roads were smooth, it would be just fine.

This is not my daily driver.

I have the 16's on a Justa and really am very pleased. Also, I have a spare! I'll be switching to Non-run flats once these wear out....another reason I'm glad for the 16's and a spare tire. If you ordered an "S", you will not get a spare to due the routing of the exhaust.

Hey DD,

Yes I realize if I get an "S" I will not get a spare. That was a minor factor in my decision to get a Justa in 09. The major reason I went with the Justa back then is because it seems like there were many more engine related problems with the "S" back then. I just have the standard 15 inch wheels on my 09.

Go with the 16" stock for winter use, then pick up some aftermarket 17's for summer.

The roads fall apart around here in the winter, you'll want the extra cushion, and the 195s will cut through snow better than the 205s.

15" or 16" good for winter. Or if you have a F56 Cooper ( NON S ) you can get factory steelies for winter.

Mfg Part# 36116851510

Summer 17 or 18" look nice.

Thanks and good luck on the choices.
