It was fuel dumped into the exhaust, so it was real, but controlled by the ECU, so some called it fake. They got rid of it with R56 in 2007 because they got too many people going to the dealer with 'My exhaust is making funny sounds' complaints. There was even a TSB about it. Later they added it back in with 'sports mode' button.

For some of us, it's the closest we'll come to having a more proper sports car. Can't we live the dream Steve?

I am getting some pops and bangs from my F56 S but only in SPORT mode, I didn't hear anything on the demo car. I've only got a 100 or so miles on the clock so I think with time it will get better :-)

I have a Burble setting programmed onto my hearing aids. I always wondered what that was for. Now I know. Have to make sure I don't turn it on when I'm driving a golf cart lol.

I only have 410 miles on the 2015 MCS manual , so I have been real easy on the revs which has been a pain because I want to stand on it. Today I leaned on it a little and was shifting at 4000 rpm in Sport and then backing off the throttle into the corners. I was getting the pop gurgle of the exhaust. It sounded good especially on a stock car. I was supprised to hear it and pleased.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong... but I think the car needs to be pretty warmed up for the pops. The exhaust needs to be hot enough to ignite the leftover fuel. So it probably won't happen at all on a test drive. Anyway, this is a pretty old thread so all of you must own the car by now... =D

Mine does it in sport mode only.

Has to be warmed up of course but in 2nd and 3rd gear I can get it to happen on command usually. Just let off the throttle when the engine/turbo is still wound up above 4000 RPM and it will snap crackle and pop for a few seconds.

My son thinks it funny... He thinks people are going to duck or jump in fear. He usually begs me to do it when we are pulling into his school parking lot.

My 2015 MCS is not making the pop/gurgle noise in sport mode. Dropped it at the dealer today so we'll see what they say.

There's an area near me where you turn down a street in 2nd then you need to make a right relatively close. There's no point in shifting to 3rd because you'll have to downshift almost immediately. Turn, step on it, let it coast, burble! I giggle every time.

Yep! That's the feeling!!! When you coast from high rpms! I was genuinely surprised at how sporty and noticeable it was for stock! It definitely adds a lot to this car for me

I really hope they have not turned it off for 2015-cars. They did that once on R56 S in a software update I remember.

Although I have an r58 fJCW. I'll confirm that it only happens in sport mode and the car has to be warmed up. Personally I love it especially in traffic where you "rubber band" in the flow of traffic. Every once and a while you'll get a loud one.

Does anybody really know how it's done. Have read here that it's programmed to dump fuel into exhaust but I find that very hard to believe in the world of emissions and environmentalist. Just can't see raw fuel being used to not fully combust. Raw fuel damages cats.

When I test drove the F56 S I definitely noticed the pops at least... can't recall if it really burbled. Mine should arrive next week so I'll find out soon enough!

I have the same car and I agree, only in Sport do I ever hear it. I agree, it's hard to believe it takes fuel to make it happen. The F56 delivers fake exhaust sound through the speakers of all things. I also found that hard to believe but one poster verified that he had found the circuit that did it and turned it off I think. I'm REAL glad I don't have that on my car.

Pop/Burble is on every 2002-2006 R53 and 2005-2008 R52/W11.

Engineered out of the R56/N14 redesign for 2007 due to complaints from customers (of all things), and then put back in during the R56/N18 LCI (2011) when the vehicle is in sport mode only. Again, the change was made due to complaints from MINI owners missing it, LOL.

F56/B46/B48 models have it as well only in Sport mode and when the vehicle is warmed up.

And yes, there is an audible speaker to bring engine/exhaust sounds into the cabin of the F56/B46/B48 models. Mostly from complaints that the new vehicles are too quiet inside.

I do miss all the sounds (supercharger whine, pop/backfire, etc.) of the R53/R52(W11) models ... made them so much more fun to drive!

+1 F56 S but only in SPORT mode and warmed up and shifting hard, I only got it really loud and hard down shifts.

The FJCW R58 N14 does it allot after warmed up. The FJCW N18 does it more often.

The gap in the years for non burble was the complaint that there MINI was backfiring. lol

Hmmm... so is the F56/S in sport mode really backfiring or is the computer/speaking making that noise to "simulate" that backfire? It's pronounced in my car but now I am wondering is this a simulated sound?!?

I think the sound production according to MINI is just a complement certain tones, not the full range. When You drive down a narrow street you can hear the pop and crackle bouncing off the buildings on hard downshifts in sport mode. So that's coming from the outside, I drove with the windows down in the F56 to test this. The R58 JCW does sound much better though. But its apples and oranges.

It's definitely not simulated since you can hear it from behind the car.

As for the fake engine noise, I know people hate it but I love it so much I would pay for that as an option. It makes the car sound so much better than it actually sounds! The car wouldn't be as much fun if that deep rumble was absent.

I don't say that to be contrary to anyone. I REALLY love it!

Sport more + rumble + burble = happy!

Seriously? Wonder if something was wrong?

Both of my R52/W11s were almost obnoxiously loud. Friends would always try tell me that something was wrong as a result. And in one tunnel, where you let off the gas toward the end, it was the most entertaining echoed pop and backfire - sheer joy!

Sheer joy! Yes. Exactly how it feels. It's so silly that the smiles per mile just go way up. Even my wife gets it. But she jokes saying that Lucy is farthing again. lol.

It was completely stock and mantained perfectly, so I'm not sure. Funny thing is, my current car, '07 R56S, with catless DP and NM exhaust, pops all the time. So evidently my cars are....

Went for a spirited drive on a new road today. I heard the pops more with the windows up vs down. Not sure what that says.
