ABC Reports BMWs Catching Fire

A startling news report today - Has anyone heard of a Mini spontaneously combusting? I realize this should be in the "news" section but I can't post there...

Unless more news agencies take the story, and perform actual journalism, I'd take the story with a huge bag of salt.

ABC. Not noted for in-depth research/investigation. They probably read it on HuffPo.

Several 1st gens caught on fire from power steering pump and harness issues, both parked and while being driven, and were later recalled.

Also, the 2nd gen had a recall for the possiblilty of a car fires when the engine was off.

Yeah I had a recall on my 2010 Cooper S hardtop as the fan relay could cause the car to catch fire. Was related to the fan running some after the car was turned off.

You have been around since forever and never heard of the Minis spontaneously combusting? The most current stories very well could be fake news but when I first got my 2010 S hardtop there were definitely ones that caught fire and considering they issued a fan relay recall to stop that issue and didn't recall other serious issues that should say something about the severity of the issue at least in Mini's eyes.

So... Just found out about this. I guess it's not fake news after all. Feeling vindicated.

The electric auxiliary water pump may fail and cause the circuit board to overheat.

Remedy

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the electric auxiliary water pump, free of charge. Depending on the model, there are currently limited parts available, however not all parts are available at this time. Owners will be notified of the recall beginning June 11, 2018, and will receive a second notification when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact MINI at 1-866-825-1525. Note: BMW recommends that owners park their vehicle outdoors until the recall remedy has been performed."

Didnt NBC do something like this years ago and got caught putting things that would start a fire in the cars?

Then there was the time when raw fuel was dumping right onto the exhaust pipe on my 1989 XJS V-12. I towed the car in and my mechanic laughed and explained this was an example of brilliant Jaguar engineering -- the fuel line rots out at that exact point, the car catches fire, the owner gets an insurance check for the totaled car and buys a new Jag because anyone nuts enough to buy a Jag will surely make the same bad choice again and buy another one.

Or the ability of the XJS V-12 to run on a single bank of 6 cylinders if the other bank fails BUT, if you don't shut down as soon as you feel the power loss, the car will continue to dump raw fuel into the deactivated cylinder bank and then on into the hot catalytic converter, resulting in a catastrophic fire.

So MINI and BMW have a long way to go to get their engineering up to the level of those clever Brits across the street at Jaguar.
