2017 S All4 Whirring/howling noise
Hi all,
I recently purchased my 2017 Clubman S All4, currently with 62,xxx miles. I have had some growing “whirring/howling” noise coming from somewhere. I replaced both passenger side wheel bearings and nothing has changed. It has gotten progressively worse from at first being noticeable around 45-55 mph, to now being noticeable (and almost unbearable between 40-60 mph) at all speeds. Volume and pitch increase with speed. The sound does not change when turning but is always present in drive, when slowing, and in neutral. The sound also intensified when the DDC is on in sport mode.
I am on Bridgestone Potenza run flats, except for the right passenger which is a non run flat version (had a sidewall bulge that needed replacing). I did notice when changing the right rear wheel bearing that I have heavy wear on the inside of the tire. So maybe a cupping issue?
I am taking it into the shop Thursday to get it diagnosed but wanted to post here to see if anyone else has had similar noises and might be able to tell me what I could potentially be looking at for repair. Not sure if my video link will work but I’ll keep trying to get it posted.
Thanks!

I don’t notice much of a change in sound when the road surface changes.
The front end alignment was off when I purchased it but that has since been corrected. I did not have the rear done but it will be inspected Thursday.
I hope it’s only tires, maybe I can convince my wife that new tires should come with new wheels…enkei ts-10s maybe?
The Verdict
My mechanic just informed me that the transfer case is bad. So if anyone hears a noise like this on an All4, get ready to open your wallet. $4200 to replace with a new transfer case. Yikes!
ouch! Thanks for the update
