FOG LIGHTS

I wanted to change the bulbs in the original fog lights, the original ones look yellow and ugly. I was hoping to buy some that would be the same watt to avoid a lot of problems but a similar color to the xenon lights? Does anyone know where and what kind of light bulbs I need and how do you switch them, because it’s going to be tight to get in there!

The stock fogs are H7. If you want to match the Xenons, look for a color temperature around 5000K. Replacing them shouldn't be too bad. Jack the front of the car up and remove the wheels. You need to take the inner fender liner off or at least bend it back enough to get to the back side of the fog lights. It's held on by pop rivets (unscrew the center and pull the rivet out). Once your in there, you can clearly see the fog light connector. It should be pretty easy to figure out from there.

Oh, yeah, I forgot...the '02's and early '03's were H7. They changed over to H11 in '03.

I have an 06 MCS so that would apply to me. The other thing that I'm concerned about is any problems. my friend decided to switch his bulbs in stock head lights and he had some problem. He bought a pair for about $50 and 2 days later one of the bulbs melted, messing up his whole light. Will there be any problems if I switch my fog lights??

Thanks Guys!

As long as you stick with the right wattage (55w), you shouldn't have any problems. Increasing the color temperature has the possibility of causing problems but you'd have to go above 8000k (purple) before worrying about that.

I'm not completely sure, someone else may be able to help you out with that one. I think it's called a bayonet. Do a search, I'm pretty sure there will be threads on this topic.

DjR53 is right, it's still just a 55w bulb. If you like the PIAA yellow's and don't want to pay and arm and a leg, look for Nokya bulbs on Ebay. I got some H3's for my Hella fogs for <$25 and I haven't had any issues.

I have had the Nokya H11 yellow bulbs for a couple of years now. I got them on Ebay and have had no problems with them at all. As with any halogen bulb, use denatured alcohol and a clean microfiber towel to remove any traces of oils (from your hands), or other contaminants.

Interesting...honestly, my 06/02 build also has H11 but at least one was replaced after an encounter with a tree limb during the hurricane season a couple years ago. I always thought they replaced both of them but maybe they were H11 to start with. The Bentley manual says they are H7 as do a few other places I've checked.

Yup, my owner's manual says H7 to. I bought bulbs without checking first and ended up using those in my high beams. Now I'm just going to run HID fogs. I've had one in there for quite some time and all is good, sharp cut-off and everything. Plus they actually match, can't go wrong...

No, you don't have to worry about your wiring. The confusion comes from the fact that automotive bulbs are generally classified by how much power they consume (Watts), not how much light they produce (lumens). "Lumens per Watt" varies greatly, depending on the technology used in the bulb and the color temperature (2500K, 4200K, etcetera).

As an extreme example, consider the burner coil on your stove. You can think of it as a light bulb with an exposed filament. Even though it may consume hundreds of Watts of power, most of it is being released in the form of heat and infrared light, which is why you get less illumination from a stove burner than you do from a 5W nightlight.

In your case, the manufacturer is simply claiming that their 55W bulb produces the same amount of light as a 110W bulb from some other manufacturer. But since they consume the same 55W as the stock bulbs, your wiring won't be in any danger.

Be weary about replacing your main headlights and high beams with just HID bulbs. I just bought 4 for my main headlights and fogs and it is considerably harder to see at nite with them in because they're actually dimmer. I don't think the reflective housing in the headlight assembly reflects the HID light as well as the OEM bulbs...

+1

I did by those cheaper "HID" before and they are worse than oem they look cool though and they even "look brighter" from outside. Although I did get the PIAAs for my fogs on the MINI after oems went dim, and they are alot better than my old nokyas and oems but they were pricey, but the place I got them says they got a 1 year warranty? Now I am switching to H7 Orsams Ralley 65watt for Highs and H9 Orsam 55w+ for fogs. These are the Euro versions of the Silverstars. Folks on ralley and Land Rover type site say they are the best!!! Guess I'll give em a try? (apparently you could put H9s in place of H11s??) Just depends if you want the "cool blue/purple" look or just some strong lights:impatient MINIS so bright I gotta wear
