Help where to hook up gauge lights.

Okay recently got some gauges:smile: , i hooked up the boost and now i need to figure out how to wire the lights. I've been reading about hooking into the grey/red wire. the problem is that there is not enough room for my fat hands to manuever through the pedals and "pick apart" the bundle of wires to find the correct one. I noticed there are zipties attaching the bundle to something (the firewall?) if i cut these would it let the bundle magically drop and allow me to acess the wires easier? Next; while trying to find info on wiring, i noticed many people talking about tapping into the cig. lighter but i cant even find these wires. i like that idea better because i never use it and its not as important as my headlights. I opened a flap between the pillars and above the "cubby" which had a small bundle of wires wrapped in that black cloth are the power wires in there? And how do you safely remove that black stuff? All in all i think this thread could serve a great purpose as the other threads talking about hooking up gauge lights only talk about one method. So if you have pics or info POST IT . thanks

Where are you installing your gauges??? By the tach or near the cig lighter..

If you are installing the near the tach, you can use the wire that provides lighting for the tach.. I believe it/s red/white or pink/white.. can't remember.. I used a volt tester with the lights on to figure out which one it was.. Easiest way would be to be able to get under the tach.. not that hard to take off..

For the cigarette lighter... I actually had to remove the whole console to get to the bottom of the lighter.. not that hard really.. it turns out the lighting cable is the same as the one from the tach.. Not too bad to take it out..but it does involve in taking out the 2 towers (where the radio sits between).. and the shifter panel... Sorry don't know the terms..

Sorry not too clear, but I hope it helps a bit..

that is a great help the cig lighter seems too big of a pain in the butt for me. I forgot to say i installed the gauges by the tach. I know there is a small bundle of wires wrapped in black that plug into the back of the tach is that where the wire you're talking about is located? that would be really easy.

Yup that's the spot... Use one of those "light testers".. or voltmeter if you have one.. But there should be only one wire (out of 4, I believe) that has a "red" strip... That's your light power..

Alongside of the cars inside fuse box (must remove platic) is a bunch of cables, which is infront of the fuses. Inside those are TWO GRAY w/ PINK STRIPE - one of those is the cable that handles the dash lights.

You got a 50/50 chance of selecting the right one without tools. My guage lights worked after the SECOND attempt.
.
I just dropped the wire down and found it easier to work there than farther up the dash near the tach. Also easy to find ground in the area.

Holy Zombie Thread, Batman....

This is the easiest place to grab lighting voltage by far.

I found that the two gray/pink wires also are in the ginormous bundle of wires above the plastic diagonally up from the inside fusebox, and they were easily accessible if you pull the knee bolster down. I got it first try, but I had a test light to help in choosing the wire.... I didn't tap mine, but instead cut it and added an insulated spade connector to crimp them back together, so it's an easy plug-n-play to add the wire to my gauges, and easy to add more later--because you *know* there will be more gauges added later....

C ya,
