Stereo keeps cutting out (HK)

my stereo is cutting out, it started by just blipping, and now it will not work for a whole day at a time. the head-unit works fine (or seems to) and doesn't appear to have any power issues (no shorts) but the sound will randomly cut out, and every now and then blip in for 2 seconds.
since the hk amp seems to have issues, it made me think that that may be the culprit.

i wasnt really looking to do this repair, but ive done my fair share of custom stereo installs from the ground up, but not a patch on a system like this.

does this look like a suitable replacement?
its capable of 4x60w @ 2ohm RMS

and seems to be of similar dimensions to the hk so i could fit it back in the same spot.
plus its a class D MOSFET with .005% harmonic distortion

It is my understanding you either replace the HK amp with another, or you completely phase it out and replace the entire stereo with aftermarket components, to include the head unit and speakers.

I searched the Marketplace using the keyword "hk." Here's a complete system for $275: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co.../12788/cat/all.

The HK amp in the R50/53 is a completely proprietary setup. Either replace it with another exact HK (new or used) or remove everything and start from new. That means wiring and everything from the ground up, technically you could re-use the 2ohm speakers, but that would be silly.

You can use the HU but the speakers are the difficult part in all of this. There have been a few people that have used a different amp (Sony I believe) but they had to parallel the dual coils and the sound is not as good.

If you have the multi-function steering wheel controls, go to http://www.newministuff.com/new/index.php. Go to the 1st-gen interface/fitting kit section. You can get an adapter that allows you to use them with aftermarket stereos.
