Sport button mod--how's it work?
I put a sport button module on my justa recently and it works great but I have questions. What, exactly, is the module doing when I turn on the ignition? I'm guessing it provides a momentary path to ground for the blue sport button wire, correct? Are there other functions that normally default to "off" that I could use the module for? I was thinking of the cruise control but I don't know if a momentary ground would turn it on.
Depends on the module
there are some single channel ones and there are multi channel ones. But your basic premis is correct. The momentary buttons "pull down" the wire to ground (or close to it). The one I make also can do the DSC system and, if your car has it, the auto start/stop system. (with some other stuff too). To use modules like these at other parts of the car, you have to know where to get the wire. A lot of systems on the 2nd gen are also buss systems, so you may have to open up a module to get access to the raw switch wire. Another thing to know is that some systems (like the DSC system) require certain timing intervals to be done, so it's not as simple as just pulling the wire down for an instant. For that reason, and a lot of others (like using the buttons to enable and disable the function, or do auxilliary system control), we use a multi-input multi-output microcontroller to handle all the logic and the like. All the DIY systems I've seen are turned "on" when installed, and only are diabled when removed.

the buttons are really stupid and don't know the status. Also, it would take some digging in the wiring diagrams to know where the button wire turns into buss traffic.
Yes it's possible, but it would take a bit of work to do. By work, that means hunting down the wiring to see if there's an easy way to get to it. If there is, it's a pretty simple job (tap into that wire, add a ground, and get power from one of the circuits that turns on when the car starts).
Who's module did you get? If you got mine, then you could use one of the unused channels (if you're not using start/stop control, for example). Another thought is to put both switches together and just use one. This would make each button work both functions, but for screwing around and testing, it would let you know if it's worth the trouble to get another module, or, preferably, upgrade to mine!

Sorry, but I have the KPtech module. I'd really like to have my cruise control default to "on" but I don't know which wire to attach to. I use my cruise every time I drive so I guess I'll just have to develop a habit pattern of always turning it on when I start the car.
I'll do some digging into it
to see if it's hard. BTW, for a bit more than another kp module, you could get the Auto Sport+, so there may be a way to turn you into an FES customer yet!
