Electrical remote start..

Real OEM says that's only for R50's and R52 convertibles. How about something like the Viper Smart Start system? Can the factory alarm be utilized or would that be useless?

Yes i have one in my '03 R53. Its not the iphone one but prior to. I can upgrade to it. The 5701 is what i have. You have to put a relay in for the clutch so the car thinks the clutch is in. Can't be in gear of course!!!!!
Juice11604, or anyone else with the viper smart start,
how much did you actually pay after everything? I am getting quotes from $600.00-$800.00
Keep in mind i want the iphone activation which is a little more... but let me know what you have installed, and how much you payed please
hmm that much money for a warm car? or maybe just get a couple more mods for my car

it depends on what you are looking for. I used to install remote starts and security systems. The cheapest remote start gets very little range. I would recommend one that has a 2 way transponder. That means that the unit will tell you that the car has started. You are looking at about 200$ for one of those remote starts. I am pretty sure you need a 556U to read the chip in the key. That will cost you 50$ unless the installer makes one with a relay, which would be cheaper, but he would definitely be expecting a tip. Then you would need a relay to bypass the clutch, which is 5$ or so. Another 100 to install puts you around 350$. If you are ever in the north jersey area. I would be willing to help.
I've commented on this before. Putting a remote start in a manual tran. vehicle is DANGEROUS. Most shops won't install remote start on a manual vehicle.

Remote starts are avalable for gen1 mini's with sticks...
Properly installed they are safe...you must go through a very specfic shutdown sequence to enable the remote starter...
The shop next to Greasy's in MA sells/installs them, I think about $200...a few folks have gotten them and like them.
Installed by a pro, and done right, the clutch lockout switch is NOT removed...
It does leave you needed to use the parking brake, which if it is slushy could cause issues if the cable freezes...IMO you you always use both the brake and the clutch, but that is a different conversation/argument!!
