HID fog lights

in my stock 2004 fog housings, im wondering if i could put in some HIDs without running into any issues. i dont daily drive my car, so im not going for the yellow look, but more the blue (not too dark but not too white) look. ill be swapping the stock xenons out as well, might retro fit in some projectors possibly since i got to take them apart to joey mod them anyways.

but heres my question. my friend ordered a few kits from ddmtuning.com and hasent had any issues. they make a kit with 35w ballasts and 55w. bulbs are the same for either kit, its just the ballasts that are different.

my friend has a 35w and 55w set. the 55s are deffinently brighter, but they wash out some of the color in the process.

so basically a 55w kit with 10000k bulbs would look like a 35w kit with 8000k bulbs (only brighter). it wouldnt look like a normal 10000k with more of a purplish tint to it.

id like to get the 55w kits, but will these work out for the fogs? they kind of melted a little bit on my friends fogs. his is a 2008 tahoe, the fogs are bigger than ours, but i was thinking maybe the MINI fogs are of higher build quality?

i know the stock halogens get pretty hot, i touched the lens once while they were on just to see and it burnt me. i think the 55w kit would work out, but i wanted to get some opinions from you guys.

if not, i could get the 35w 8000k for the fogs, and 55w 10000k for the headlights, and they'd most likely match pretty good, but id rather match them 100%.

btw, ive searched the forum for this, found a few threads, and i think some have done this, but i wasent sure about the 55w kits getting hotter, and i assume the people who have put HID's in their fogs used a regular 35w kit as that's what most of them are i believe.

I have had 35W HID's in my fogs for 7 months now....work fanatastic. Was 35.99 on eBay + shipping costs. Kit ended up being about 55 dollars. It is my second kit I have installed in two different cars and I am very pleased with the quality. No OEM housing melting and I use them all the time. Lens is clear as was new. I think I did a write up here somewhere including photos of where to mount it.

I have OEM Xenons. In the video, I have OEM Xenon HD lights on then activated fogs, then turn fogs off.

Huge gains and they do not blind on coming traffic.

Found some photos. MINI has to be put into service mode. But that is very easy with basic shop tools.

Used OEM bolt to mount the ballast. Red arrow points to it.

It was plug-n-play and took about 10 mins a side. Used quick ties to make sure the ballast would not vibrate around, then applied some black electical tape for good measure.....

No, they burn too hot for the OEM plastic housings. Besides, these babies really put out some lumens, more than the low beams, and the 55's would be total overkill.

Doesn't the HID kill your cutoff line on the fogs gRay rAvEn? Got any pics of the cutoff against a wall?

those look to be the apexcone raptors from ddm. they are now on sale on their website. ddmtuning.com
i did my alta light bar with these and its insane how bright they are. (35 watt kit) they are brighter by a lot than even my high beams. when i turn my highs on, the only difference you can tell is the middle of the light bar pattern gets maybe 1 shade color yellower. lol. but no visibility change :P ( i have the ddm slim kit which even though they are both 35 watt, is not QUITE as bright as the apexcone raptors... but it is OOOO so much smaller

Did you get the same 'k' color bulbs for your DDM slim kit and your Apexcone Raptor kit? Just wondering if the output difference has anything to do with bulbs rather than ballasts.

How did you do this to the fog lights? Is there a "how to" that I could read? Did you have to make any special cuts to the housings? Are those the original OEM fog lights that you used?

Simply hid bulbs in the oem housings. No cutting of housings reqd. You do have to find a location for ballasts though. Iirc you have to remove bumper cover and possible fender liner. Not overly difficult but it is somewhat time consuming.

Good news. I have my stock xenons and ballasts to put to use.

Thanks.

How do you put the Mini in service mode? I have been looking for the how to but am unable to locate it. Anyone have a how to on this? I have my stock xenon headlights and dont mind taking them part as long as I dont mess them up only to find that the retrofit xenons dont work.

3000k= yellow 4500k=white 6000k=white/blue 8000k=blue 10000k=purple.
The Higher you go,the Lumens Decrease.
Ive used DDM's products for my previous car and currently on my Moto and never had a problem.
I personally would not go over 6000k.

I've bought quite a bit of DDM lighting stuff for my e36 and never had a problem. Good bang for the buck. My only minor complaint is that the 4500k bulbs are slightly bluer than the oem hid headlights which I suspect are 4300k.

As for service mode, the how-to section has a thread on removing bumper. That should help. service mode = bumper removed.

Since i didnt have mounting brackets, I mounted my ballasts in a spot slightly higher than gray raven using doubled sided tape and zip ties. It's super secure.

Is there a wiring diagram for this? I want to gut my old oem xenon headlights and turn my foglights into xenons however, matching the right wires together is holding me back. In order to make this a "plug and play" setup is there a harness that I could get at RadioShack or some other electrical place?
