Install MSD coil

I am doing an install of a msd coil. When I take the bolts off the OE unit, they do not work on the msd because of the sleeve over the bolt. I have checked at Home Depot, Lowe's, and Advanced Auto for similar bolts. Where do I get these bolts? Thanks!

from the Alta site about MSD,
Prior to ordering check the pins to see if you have round or flat! The difference between a round pin and a flat pin coil is determined by the pins that connect the coil to the wiring harness and can be easily determined as follows. Slide the red locking tab to the right, press down on the tab and pull the connector off the coil. Check connector to see if you have flat pins or round pins. Push the connector back on until it clicks in place and slide the red locking tab back to the left, locking position.

Check with Mini Mania...

I ordered min through them. Though it was more $ than the other vendors out there, they include new bolts. After speakin to some locals that had problems finding the correct length bolts i decided it would be worth the extra $

They may be able to sell you the bolts if you cant find them locally. Heres a link ...http://new.minimania.com/web/Item/NME3021/InvDetail.cfm

They are just a standard metric size. Any Ace hardware should have a replacement that will fit the MSD. I used a black allen-head bolt for appearance.

Mini Mania does sell the bolts by themselves. I just ordered from there. Thanks for all of your help!

Hi Guys,

Do we have to install the rubber insulator with the MSD Coil? I also order the bolts from MINI mania. Do you know what is the torque we have to apply on the bolt. The rubber insulator on the top seems to break under the pressure.

Thank you in advance,

Are you talking about the rubber rings on the bolts? They are not needed. I used spacers under the bottom of my MSD coil.

I used some rubber spacers and longer bolts at the base and top to help cut down on vibration and heat to the coil.

seems im alittle late, the size is M6 x 1.0 x 55 mm for the replacement bolts. watch the how-to video at Mini Madness. http://www.mini-madn ess.com/mini-cooper-s-msd-coil-pack.aspx dont over tighten the bolts because you can crack the valve cover. just tight enough until you notice the grommets are compressing.

Make sure you use rubber grommets, top & bottom.
If you don't bolts will go right through valve cover.

Ditto. I ordered from them and it came with a new set of bolts.

BTW, I would advise against sourcing just any kind of bolt that fits from a hardware store. I believe the bolts thread into an aluminum base. You do not want a dissimilar metal in there that will set up galvanic corrosion.

I removed the sleeves and reused the oe bolts. Was a pain, but vice grips eventually did it.
