Dechromed Lights Problem

I have dechromed my rear tail lights by having Lyle @ Vinyl Styles applying a red tint to cover the lens. I like the resulting look but as you can see the "back up" lights are also covered and are now usless when backing up at night. And also illegal in California. How diffcult would it be to swap out the red rear fog lamp lens with a clear one and then just reverse the wiring between the fog lamp and the back up lights? Or is there a better way? Are the lens sold seperately?

I did the exact thing you are asking for. You can replace the bottom light and wire it in to the backup light wiring so that you can see just fine. Here is a pic of mine. I can't remember who sold the light and wiring but I am sure a quick search through the popular vendors and you will find it.

Loesches, thanks for the info. I did check the vendors here on NAM and found what I hoped was the solution to my problem. But naturally I didn't "bookmark" it and now I can't remember which vendor it was.

Thanks, that's the one I had seen but couldn't find again. Now it's bookmarked.
Now, it seems that it shouldn't be too difficult to swap the wiring from the current backup lights (in the tail light cluster and covered) to the new back up light (located where the existing rear fog light is) and vice versa. Anyone know if there may be any "hidden" problems I could run into that I might not be anticipating?

you could just buy the lamp from MINI for like 9 dollars, then when you need it at night, just flip your fog light switch on. in the day time you will never know, and the cops will still see the white housing.

Agokart, that was my original intention but when I checked with the local dealer I was quoted a price of $80 (US). The dealer stated that you CANNOT purchase just a clear/white lens. You have to purchase the entire housing. At that point I decided to go the route of swapping the wiring.
