A Mod I Wish I Had Done 2 Years Ago...

... changing out the OEM Daytime Running bulbs for Sylvania Silverstar H7-SU, super white bulbs. I got tired of the yellowish appearance of the OEM bulb.

40-couple dollars and 10 minutes.

These pics don't really do these bulbs justice. They don't show just how white they are, compared to the OEM lamps. Or how much more light they put out. Anyway....

Aftermarket daytime running lights:

OEM daytime running lamps:

Aftermarket high beams (daytime running lights and xenon low beams)

OEM high beams:

Close up of aftermarket bulb:

Closeup of OEM bulbs:

I tried to get rid of my egg yolks too, but spray painting the tops of the orange bulbs. But the reservoir has a reflective material in the back that kept it from working out as I hoped. Still working on that.

Okay, just make sure that the next time you come across an inexpensive and really cool mod that you let me know.

I love my Silverstars. Combined with xenons, the highs are like daylight.

By daytime driving lights, do you mean your park lights? I'm pretty sure only the two tiny ones (where the indicators are) are the only ones which come on with my R53?

When I turn it up one more, the Xenons come on. Hmm. Why do all of yours have another light in between?

I'm lost. And probably just embarrased myself!

Looks good!

I really like the light that Silverstars make and really felt that they lit up the road better when I had them. The problem I had with them, though, was their short lifespan. The first time I used them, they were replacing bulbs that had lasted 4 years....the first Silverstar failed at 6 months....then the second 3 months later. I decided that I couldn't afford to keep buying them at this rate and put in regular old Sylvania Halogens and they lasted a couple years until I traded off the car.

This has been a couple of years ago, so maybe the bulbs have improved since then...but that was my experience with them.

Before I put my halo lights in, I just put a light coat of white on the entire bulb. It worked great for getting rid of the yolk. Lights flashed amber, but disappeared behind the oem lenses. I used white because thats what I had and didn't want to but a can just for 2 bulbs. It worked just as well.

Daytime running lights are a dealer changable option inwhich the highbeam bulbs are turned on all of the time at a low voltage. In a car with this enabled, the 'parking light' switch just turns all the other exterior lights, one farther puts on the xenon.

Might have to try that... just a very light coat, so the amber can still show through when it's blinking. Cool. Thanks !

Oooh. That's new to me. So it's something which needs to be done when the car is first being built, or is this something which the dealer can change? Just wondering why I'm the only person with only the teeenie park lights. Haha.

The dealer can program your daytime running lights. But they're going to charge you half an hour of labor time. Depending on your location... $50-75.
Keep in mind that even without your daytime running lights programmed to be on, this is a good mod. Because that bulb is also your high beam bulb. The night time lighting is much better than with the OEM lamp.
