Electrical Brake lights out ONE SIDE??
Brake lights out ONE SIDE??
I have an 04' "S" I did the mod to make the unsued rear fog light an additional brake lamp. I did this 4 years ago. It has worked flawlessly
all this time. A couple of days ago the passenger side brake lights (both)stopped working. I just figured 4yrs was pretty good for those bulbs, so I put in some new bulbs.....that did not fix the problem. The turn signal works, the running light works and that bulb is the dual filament bulb, second filament is orig. brake light. NO brake light!
I have a second set of NEW take off taillights, so I tried exchanging the
bulb panel thinking that might be it..no help.
Is there a seperate actuater for each side ? at the brake pedal ?
ANY IDEAS I'm stumped..

I had a similar issue last spring w/my cooper as well. It was the the Brake Switch that had failed. Dealer replaced (part#: 61.31.6.967.601), grand total: 143.25 incl. one hour labor. Hope this helps!!

Speaking of coincidence. My 06 has done the same thing this week. The passenger side brake light does not work. I checked and it is getting only 10v compared to the12v on the driver side. I've looked in the service manual but I am unable to find anything on the brake lights. BC Module? Where is this located so I check to make sure it is secure at least.
Corohio, were both sides out for you or was it a single side?

Same thing happened on my 04 MCS. Was the BC-1 Module. Dealer replaced under warranty. I removed the mod before I took to the dealer. Good thing I did as repair would have cost over $400.
Some say the brake light mod will/may cause the BC-I Module to fail, others have had a failure with out any mod and that the mod shouldn't cause a BC-1 failure. Regardless, I have not re-installed the mod. Warranty has expired and I don't need to spend that much money to replace the BC-1 module again.

I think the safest mod to take advantage of the upper light (fog) is to swap the brake light lead and the fog light lead. That way the fog light will come on when the brakes are applied and the lower lights will only come on with the running lights. I did this and am real happy with the results.

Sorry, just saw your inquiry...
The answer is NO!! I have not figuered out my problem.
I did purchase a new brake light switch, however I haven't had time
to try and replace it. It is situated in a very difficult location above
the brake pedal under the dash.
After I get around to it I'll post if it cured the problem. Cross your fingers
because otherwise it may be a module that costs over $400 and isn't
user replaceable.

Still hoping to see if someone fixed the mysterious right side brake lights not working but the running and turn signal does. I switched the bulb panels with the left side and all the lights worked so I know it's nothing with that.
So it sounds like it could be either a wiring problem, brake switch with only right side broken, or this BC module. So how to test to see if it's the BC module. I know I'll get pulled over soon by our local Barney Fife finest.

BC-1 Module
So what did it cost to have the BC-1 Module replaced??
Is it a DIY thing and if so how much is the part..
Could that be the problem with my power window switches too!

This was a couple of years ago and the BC-1 Module was replaced under warranty. Don't remember the cost but I think it could have been around $400 to $600 w/o warranty. Maybe someone else can chime in with costs.
Could also be the problem with windows.
Not sure if it would be a DYI thing as I think the ECU would need flashed after new BC-1 module was installed.

If that is the case, just un-plug the other ecu before taking to dealer. After problems are fixed, plug the other unit in and you should be fine.
BTW: I could be wrong about the dealer having to flqash the ECU after replacing the BC-1 Module.
I wish that were the case.. This was January or February of 04'
at that time they were doing a direct map via a laptop. My car
has all the mods you mention on your car except the crank and
has run flawlessly for 50,000 mi and 6 yrs so you can see why I
don't want any mapping problems. I'll check with the local dealer
if they even need to flash. Thanks for your input, you may have
noticed, that light has been out for about 2 years....

Would have thought someone would have chimed in as to if you need a re-flash after new BC-1 Module. Let us know what dealer tells you.
While doing a routine exterior light check, I discovered the right tail light, brake light, and the right side arch lights were not working. After reading this and several other threads like it, I need some opinions and/or advice. I installed the GoMiniGo rear fog lamp kit several years ago without any problems-until now. Does anyone know of a cause for this other than the BC1 module? It would be great if I didn't have to replace the $430 BC1. Thanks.
Welll..........
After having the Brake Light Mod for 4 1/2 years, my right side brake lights died.
I know that if you buy a new BC1, the dealer has to program it. Being the cheap SOB that I am, I found a used one for $150.
Now, I've heard different information on whether a used BC1 can be "re-programed" to your car. So, if anyone has installed a used unit, did you have it re-programmed, or did you just "Plug and Go"?
Thanks!
Jim
