Has anyone hacked the shift buttons on the automatic
to be more F1/DSG like where a pull on the left is shift down and a pull on the right is shift up... Seems like it should only be a minor change once the lines are identified and depending maybe something you could make a special connector that could plug inbetween some OEM harness connector...
I guess what I'm asking is does someone have a wiring diagram for the steering wheel in an automatic and the plugs that come out.

So it looks like the paddles are "tethered" together... with a single plug out... don't know whether this plugs into the ibus (probably) or just talks to the tranny (I doubt it)...

So, depending on how "smart" the interconnect between the two halves is, it MIGHT be as simple as crossing a couple of wires in that interconnect... or it might require actually rewiring one of the modules internally...
All that said, I don't know that you'd like the results even if you accomplished this... since the paddles turn with the wheel, you'd get confused on which hand was "up" and which was "down" when cornering... which is why it is the way it is...

I looked at the diagram, and I guess it would be simple enought to buy a spare switch set and re-wire it.
As for the paddles turning with the wheel, this is common on some F1/DSG systems-just not all. I actually find it easier when it moves with the wheel than the stationary system with the giant paddles. The issue is centrifical force when driving, it's much easier and more intiutive when your chucking the car into a turn to pull on the lever than push for a downshift.

This was actually a problem for me when I test drove a MCSa. I kept pulling on the left paddle and wondered why the car refused to down shift. It never occurred to me at the time to push on the paddle.
No updates on this?
I kinda wanted to do this too.
I had SMG on my old M3, so this SSG paddle shifter setup they got for the MCS like the non-M E46 shifter paddles is confusing me.
Wiring diagram anyone???

I don't know if anyone is still interested in this but I finally found a mechanic willing to open up the steering wheel to modify the left paddle shifter on my R56 Bayswater.
He had never done such a mod before.
I'm sorry I don't have to exact details of the rewiring but from what I saw, there are 2 connectors to the paddle shifter, one with 2 wires, one with 3. By using a circuit tester he was able to determine which wires to swap around on the connector with the 3 wires. Again apologies as I wasn't paying rapt attention as he was taking a long time and I could hardly bear seeing my pristine steering wheel taken apart for a whim. I just want to confirm that it can be done. A word of warning - the airbag warning will have to be reset after, for those that want to try at home.
The mod worked perfectly and the left shifter now downshifts on pull.
