That bobodyne site is mine.
The problem with trying to wire directly up to the switches in the
panel is two fold.
1) The switches are only momentary-contact.
2) The switches are only low-voltage,l ow-current signalling switches.
So it would be possible to tap into the wire harness that comes out
of the back of the switch block and add some electronics to capture
the switch events and drive a relay, but it would take a bit of work.
I could make such a thing if you are interested, but I'd like to make
back the cost of the parts at least. Then I'd post the whole construction
article on bobodyne.com for anyone else to copy.
I'm guessing less than $25 for a single relay output in parts.

Unlike common toggle switches, the ones in the MINI toggle bank are actually not much different that what is found in a typical TV remote. Instead of controlling the various loads (functions) directly, they instead send signals to the body control module where the actual switching occurs. Also, there is a cable made up of small wires that is attached between these modules that do the communication. In other words, there is no easy way of reassigning a switch function in the normal sense. Instead, a circuit needs to be created which intercepts these control signals and filters out the one you want to access. Think of Ian Cull's window auto-up/garage door opener circuit.
It is possible, with a lot of mechanical work, to 'hollow out' the area around an unused toggle and fit a standard toggle switch. More creative types can fit the chrome toggle from the MINI onto the replacement switch. Keep in mind that the main component of the toggle bank is a printed circuit board the size of the panel itself, and this cannot be cut apart. There is about an inch of free space between the front of the panel and where this board is located. People have mounted aux jacks, switches and indicator lights in the space with little difficulty. It just takes some patience and creativity.
