holding up the motor;

soon it will be time to pull the head and pan . i was wondering if anyone has done this with the motor in the car. if so what did you use to rig the motor up? i'm thinkin' pull the pan probly then support the motor from underneath and then pull the head . is there a better way?

Why pull the pan?

i've got a bad compression reading on #4 when dry; but a wet test brings it right up . so i've got seized ring at best and bad piston and bore at worst. so while i'm specin' the bores and rings i 'll need to pull the pistons and rods . it's got a bit of a rod rap on start up sometimes too so it's just as well . so it's hold the engine up from underneath or weld up a support off the strut towers . or maybe someone's got a proven way .

I've always built wooden supports because they don't damage metal very easily. But I've done a lot of construction in the past so I have the tools and the wood so it's easy. What did you do to need so much work? Or did you just really enjoy your MINI?

Since the main motor mount attaches to the block and not the head, the motor is mostly self-supporting. THe lower mount on the pan is a torque strut and can be removed with no problems. Unless you plan on pulling the crank or trans, there is no extra support needed.

Unfortunately, you have to remove that mount to get to the timing chain tensioner bolts.
