I need a tensioner tool!

OK, started to finally put on a new sc pulley, I figured I could jerryrig something for the tensioner. Nope, with out a welder I can't figure it out. Anybody renting, or sharing, mailing, have any great ideas using something from Home Depot? In in NC, I am around RTP a this week if anybody has one.
Thanks!

Just use a 15 inch pry bar and lever it against a protected/buffered strut/chassis tower after your motor is raised! You will need a pulley removal tool though. Good luck!

Hmm, I think I will try with the tool. I tend to be very heavy handed and clumsy and well you get the picture!

You can avoid needing the tensioner tool with the following tools:

16"mm socket for use as a prying point
24" braker bar or pry bar.
Sae alen wrench that you you don't mind cutting the bottom part of the L off.
Little flat head screw driver or something thin and metal to put into the tension spring guide.

So you put the modified sae alen key into the hole on the tensioner where the pins in the tensioner tool are. you then put the 16mm socket on the bolt that is closest to the front of the car aka right above the sc. You then use the prybar or breaker bar as a lever one side above the 16mm socket and the long side below your modified sae alen key. Pry as described and place the little flat head in the slot in the metal piece in the spring guide.

As far as pulling the pully. I'd suggest the deluxe pully removal tool that I think out motoring sells. This is the easiest one to use as you don't technically have to remove the tensioner but I'll be honest with you it's nice to have it removed so you can get a good look at how the pully is seated on the sc shaft.

If you have a pully removal tool and all you need is the tensioner tool I can snap a few pics so you can get a better idea of my alternative method.

I used the alternate method and it worked just fine. There is also a post somewhere with a diagram of how to build a tensioner tool

I did mine without tensioner tool when installing my pulley. But later when replacing the belt I had to buy a tool. (not quite as much access when the engine isn't lifted )

I am able to use the method I spoke about above with the engine both in place and jacked up. I change belts using this method.

Good to know, I just wasn't clever enough to figure it out.

Are you talking about the bolt that is on the tensioner itself? I don't have enough clearance to get the socket in there. Does the engine need jacked up first? How far can you raise it.

yeah I did but I got lazy and just emailed them. Here's a copy paste of my email post if you have questions.

In the first one you will see it kinda from the side. You can see the bolt that I put the 16mm socket on as a leverage point. The other chromed tool is a extension magnet just so i could snap the pics without dropping the cut off allen wrench. I just simply cut the bottom of the L of a #5 allen wrench. I just put it in the lower of the two holes. Then of course the 24" harbor frieght braking bar. Removing the fuel pressure thingy is advisable before doing this.

The following pics are the same at different angles and focus. I was having a hard time getting a good shot so... this is the best i could muster.

So you just pry it up and then you stick something into the spring guide on the actual belt tensioner. I usually go to the second hole. You've got to put some soft elbow grease prying on the socket like that. It's definitely a brute force solution but I've done it enough at this point with no wear on the bolt nor the tensioner. Now that you have the tensione released you can either pull the tensioner or just slap the puller on there. I had the deluxe puller that out motoring sells. the one with the cup on it. So I did not have to actually pull the tensioner. http://outmotoring.com/deluxe_superc...oval_tool.html

good luck and ill be in touch if you run into problems... I don't imagine you'll have any.

If you're going to track your car go ahead and buy the tool. I think they are 75 bucks or so. I've had to change belts at the track a few times. it's a 1 hour process with the tool and many frustrating hours without it. I've done it without and it sucks. Do yourself a favor and get one.

eh to each their own. I agree with you that in track situations you need efficient tools but I can swap belts in under 30 minutes with my method. The longest part is removing the wheel well.

I've never removed the wheel well. I guess that could make things easier to get to.

puller and tensioner rental

Hello, I am looking to rent a pulley removal tool and the belt tensioner. I have bought the 15% reduction KMT pulley and can't wait to install it

I could pay the rent and shipping costs by Paypal. The only problem is I live in Romania, but I will be the one supporting the shipping costs.

If you can help, please pm me or e-mail savoinea [at] yahoo [dot] com
