After a day of customizing and a ticket....
I finished my custom CAI by following some good advice from ignote
and with the help of two good friends! Everything went smooth as can be. There was a little more custom work needed than I thought, but it looks stock and I still get the whine that I love!
Also finished the engine dampner installation same day (thanks to lordoftheflies). He definately has the best price for such a great, easy to install mod.

Airaid cone filter: $29.99 from 4-Wheel Parts
Zap a-dap-a goo 2: $ 3.00 from Gyro Hobbies
Block of foam: $1.15 from Michaels
Weather stripping: $ 4.99 from Homo Depot
3" w/45 degree bend: $3.50 from Homo Depot
Total: $42.50

For around $100, definately a cool mod to add!

I bought a stock airbox from someone on here (thanks again Ron!) for 20 bucks, so if either:
a.) I screwed up completely, I could have something to fall back on.
__or__
b.) If I ever needed to take a trip back to the dealership, I can revert to stock, so they don't give me lip about the car being modded.
After that, I took a trip to Home Depot and bought a 3" 45 degree bend pvc pipe, hacked it and with a little final touches, glued it inside the top of the box.

I just did the exact same thing to mine... modded my stock box/w PVC pipe to accept a cone filter (I'm using a K&N RU-3130 which I think is the exact same size as the Airaid you're using) and added LOTF's engine damper yesterday! I notice the biggest difference at lower RPMs--seems to accelerate faster and much smoother without near as much lag. I have an earlier build MCS than yours (12/02 build) so I had to use the $20 adapter brackets but still the damper was a simple install... I spent more time tinkering around with damper adjustment than anything else.
I fortunately didn't get a ticket. Not that I couldn't have. :-)

Seriously, looks good! GR was my stopping grounds for the first 22 years of my life. In fact, my best bro' still lives there and is the one who got me into MINI's instead of being a VW-only freak
