Drivetrain supercharger went kabloooie!!!!!
supercharger went kabloooie!!!!!
You all may recall a thread I started a few weeks ago asking how the level of supercharger internal lubrication can be checked and topped up if necessary. My service advisor had no answer and so I pressed the issue with MINIUSA. Their response was that the supercharger is a sealed unit with no dealer- or user-serviceable parts inside and there is no way to check or supplement the level of the 'life-time lubrication.' Run it till it fails, then replace it.
This is unfortunate because I have already gone through one supercharger, replaced under warranty. There must be a way to insure proper lubrication for these units. We need to start a DIY on this.

Both front and rear levels...
can be checked via weep holes on the case. Trouble is they aren't easy to get to. There are rebuild servicies available that give the unit a good going over for reasonable costs.
If you want to check the levels, you have to take the SC off as the rear bolt is under the water pump. It's not that hard, but it does take a certain force of will. The front of the car will look very, very nude with it all off.

Just an FYI on rebuilds or freshening up, these guys do just that for Eaton M series and other superchargers.

And as Dr.O stated above, you can check it, and top off the fluid if doing other work. MiniMania and others sell the recommended Eaton fluid.

Rebuilds are ~$350 through a few vendors. Service kits are ~$90.
Alternately, you can score one from m7 but I'm not sure how they'd feel about getting a hosed core back... ~$700 after core refund.
The PU Unobtanium TS pulley would have actually fixed the bearing after installation...

Curious on the failure mode - did the bearings just liquify or what? I can't imagine that much play in the shaft unless the bearings had completely lef the building. Maybe the nylon coupler shattered first??

Get your turbo on!
Doh... The bearings got cooked!
I had mine cop out at 30K and they blamed it on my boost and oil pressure guage. BMW---$2800 installed.
Suggestion.... Let the car warm up fully before getting on it. The reason mine failed was driving in -15F temperatures at high revs before the car properly warmed up.... KaBAMMM It went and the whole car shut down.

Why'd he have to move to Cali just after I started modding my MINI!?!
