If he had an 02-04 he might have went in for an 05-06 transmission instead. Starting with the 05 builds they revised the gear ratios to make it a wee bit quicker. The actual numbers of the gear ratios are available at MINI2 in the FAQ section.

A new transmission is around $3500 plus install.

Perhaps your friend was talking about having the transmission oil changed each time he took the car to the dealer - that's much less, don't know exactly but probably less than $150.

If it's a manual, it doesn't actually have "oil" and changing it (manual or automatic) between every service is a waste of money unless you race all the time.

I don't see how a software update would effect a manual, auto maybe. Could be a update that effects the throttle control around shifts, but I doubt it.

Manuals DO have oil, the MINI's is 1.8 to 2.1 quarts depending on model. It's used to lubricate the gears. Not for a torque convertor which a stick doesn't have and uses a different fluid. Don't know the spec for the MINI but most gearbox oils are around 90 wieght, the owners manual doens't say. It's not something that's changed or checked very often.

There was also a issue with some LSD"s 'groaning', and there was a change made for those that complained to a different fluid.

The '05 and later gearbox will just bolt up to the earlier cars. Look for cost in the $3000+ range for the box, then another 14-16 hours in labor for the change. We have done a few here.

The gearbox uses MTL fluid - which is a typical gear oil.

Your friend most likely has an auto, and the map can be updated through the ECU flash.

Hope that helps!
Randy

Transmission Swap

If you swap out a 03 6 speed and put in a 06 LSD 6 speed into the 03 do you have to do anything special to update the car's ECU? I had read some where that there may be issue's with the cruise control not working. Thanks....
