Drivetrain Best Resenator to quite down a Magnaflow exhaust?
Best Resenator to quite down a Magnaflow exhaust?
I love my Magnaflow exhaust with custom 3.5" dual tips. But after I added the Larini Header it became even louder and now after the FBT head and cam the exhaust is too loud for work but it is perfect for play. I need a way to quite down the exhaust with out hurting Hp/TQ. Is this possible and if so what is the best resenator on the market that will tone down the Magnflow, but not hurt performace. Or do I just have to buy a new Miltech or something?

I tried an Aero Exhaust resonator to tame my Larini catback (the non-S version), but it had no apparent effect and when I took it off two months later it was already coming apart. I put the resonator on with clamps at first figuring I would have it welded later. Good idea I guess since it made it easy to take it back off and try something else.
I suppose because that small resonator seemed to have no effect at all, I went the other way the second time with a Magnaflow muffler. I'm glad I did because it sounds great now. It's a tight fit, but you can actually squeeze one of these in there (I used a 2" in/out version for my Larini).

This one's avail from Summit Racing - they have other size/type options as well. To make this one fit you'd have to measure carefully and cut the end pipes down a bit, but I personally think it's well worth the time and trouble. No baffles, etc, it's a straight through perforated center pipe and the gap to the outer can is packed with insulation - should have negligible effect on performance.

I didn't think it would fit w/o rattling. I opted for the same Magnaflow muffler/resonator depicted above... but longer ~ 28" tip to tip with 22" resonator section & 2.5" in/out. It tuned things in my OBX/Magnaflow all 2.5" system down. Still a bit loud under full throttle, but definately more tollerable than the OE 2.25" bullet shaped chromed unit.

Just to clarify, when I said you can just squeeze one of these in, I meant in the area between the flange from an OE length header and the center pipe bracket/brace. If you try to use a longer 6" unit in that particular space it won't fit - too long. You can probably fit a longer unit further back between that central bracket/brace and the Y in your Mag, but I'm pretty sure a 6" will be too fat in that area - but they have narrower 4" and 5" versions that might fit in there - I imagine that's what minimc did.

I just looked at the post referred to by mdsbrain in your other thread - this one - and I see the Mag already has one resonator situated right behind the flange from the header. So, if you want to add another it looks like you'll have to use the area further back, ahead of the Y. If it was me doing this, I would get under there and take some measurements to see how much space is avail, but I suspect you'll end up using something like minimc's solution. I'm only guessing - and he didn't specify - but I suspect the longer muffler he used had to be narrower than 6" to fit in that part of the tunnel without rattling against the heat shield.
That Larini resonator looks pretty substantial. But something about the Mag catback is still confusing me. This diagram from the Mag rep of their 04-06 system shows a resonator up next to the header flange. Is there a version without this resonator?
The original '02 system and it was replaced with an '04 updated version.
Both looked like your posted pic.
Except the hangers.
As I mentioned to Mario in another thread I added a 4" Dia Magnaflow bullet resonator in the location shown on this sketch, I think it was 36" long and cost $60 installed at a local Orange County muffler shop. It did the job, no more drone at cruise, but it was still great when you dropped the hammer.

In addition to the Gintani intake manifold with integral air-water intercooler, my car has a custom Gintani header with 3" downpipe. When the Cat-back was 3", the power, response, etc. were awesome; however, the sound was intolerable. I've posted elsewhere that I got some sound reduction when a local muffler shop replaced a segment of the center pipe with a 28" long muffler having an i.d. of 2.25". However, the power loss was horrible, and the car was still loud even though a bit better than before. I guess that 44% reduction in the cross-sectional flow area wasn't such a good thing for performance ---
.
The other day I took my car to CPR (Chris Parker Racing) Fabrication in Costa Mesa, CA. Chris installed two in-line, 304 stainless, multi-compartment mufflers (3" i.d. and 4.5" o.d.) manufactured by Burns Stainless, also in Costa Mesa. The very loud and very bothersome drone was eliminated and the terrible sound level was reduced to a quite acceptible, but authoritative, level. In about a week or so, we'll also replace the rear Magnaflows with a Burns Y-connector and Burns mufflers for the split dual exhaust on my car. After that, the ECU will get retuned. It's been a long wait, but I'm very excited about this new exhaust system.

I can tell you that the quality of the components and the work performed are beyond outstanding, with welding that's indeed a piece of art. Flanges were eliminated and replaced with V-band clamps (quite trick), just like those used in race cars. Burns Stainless is known for their design work in F1, IRL, NASCAR and other racing applications. If anyone is looking for a custom, high-end exhaust system, then CPR Fabrication and Burns Stainless may just be the ticket!
After all the work is completed, I'll take some pics and try to get an audio recording of the car.

I used one of those magnaflow resonators in my turbo miata with a full 2.5" exhaust. It took a lot of the sting out of the exhasut note at idle and around the neighborhood (GOOD!) but was still pretty loud when you got on it. No noticible change in power.
Burn's mufflers are made by Coast Fabrication and can be made to custom sizes but even the standard sizes are at least a little expensive but they are indeed masterful designs. They are Stainless, rebuildable, light weight and have a choice of sound deadening materials. My exhaust since 2004 consists of a couple of Burn's prebent stainless pieces connected to a Supersprint race pipe and each other with their V bannd clamps. I have tried a number of mufflers includeing a 17" Burn's, which I intended to use as a resonator in combination with my 4" disc Supertrapp. As this was going to be right behind the cat I opted for the "scrubable" stainless steel packing, as it has the highest heat resistance. I never got a chance to put it there though and instead replaced my 4" Supertrapp with it. The result was not great, about the same noise level, but a little more drone and a little worse sonnd quality. I repeat, this was the only sound deadening device, on the car, had I spliced it in as intended, I would expect a different result, however I replaced the Burn's/4" Supertrapp with a 5" Supertrapp with great results so I now have a Burn's sitting in my garage.
When I was considering my size options, for resonators, I was limiting my choices to a 14" long by 5.5" body just after the cat or a 28" long by 3.5-4" body just before the "Y".
Burn's mufflers are straight through, perforated core, no baffels, no chambers.
This looks like the Milltek not the Magnaflow, check the exhaust reference thread. My memory, backed up bt the reference thread, is that the Mag does not Y at the rear but T's instead, also it's a balance tube design, so it sort of T's again for the tips. I also believe a number of people had problems with Magnaflow resonators burning out.

My MagnaFlow doesn't look like that picture at all either. The main pipe going back T's into the pipe feeding both mufflers and at the back the tailpipes T into the pipe exiting both mufflers.
I have always wanted to build my own design but the cost wouldn't justify the effort. I like my Magnaflow CAT back, bought it used at a good price, way less than new.
I have always wondered if a merged fitting from Burn's going to the mufflers and another/turn outs at the tips wouldn't improve things a bit.
From past experience with other custom exhaust's I've built adding another round muffler as has been suggested was for sound pulse deadening. Get the longest one you can fit in there. Burn's has some good reading on their page if I remember right.

Ok it is all done!! I replaced the factory Magnaflow front res with a 6" 14" Magnaflow res in the front of the car. The sound now is perfect and I don't feel any loss of power. I was glad I was able to replace the front one because that is were some vibration coming off the Larini Header. The installation was great, the guy was able to save everything so incase I wanted to sell my Maggie exaust it could be put back together OEM like. I'm very happy with the results and fitment.
Thank you to kurvhugr and norm03s for helping me out. Today was a good day. Here are a couple pix.

Outstanding! I've read a lot of posts where people want to know what to do about increased sound after putting on an aftermarket header and I think this is the best solution - a substantial but straight thru muffler right behind the header flange. I'm glad it worked out for you.
