GP Intercooler

Has anyone done any research on getting a factory GP software download along with the addition of the GP intercooler to an older(2003,4,5) Works MCS? Will Mini dealers do a download? You will probably need to have the 380 fuel injectors. This download would probably add horsepower.

If you have a works car it should have the 380s. I don't think any dealer would supply a MCW or a GP tune to anything but a MCW or GP owner, from what I'v seen.

I have some objective results to go along with my subjective sensations. Inlet air temperature and manifold air pressure measurements were performed with the BiM-COM Beta (sample rates close to 3 per second) via the OBD II and surface temperature measurements with a touch-less IRT. Data was recorded at the drag strip, on the freeway, and on rural roads.

At the drag strip (ambient 77F, altitude 600ft.) the IAT delta average was 5.22F cooler for the GP, MAP was identical within .02 psi, and surface temps for the supercharger output duct and intercooler output duct 10 degrees cooler for the GP on the IC output duct. My best ET for the day was with the stock IC; later I put the GP back on but couldn’t improve on it.

Highway roll-on testing was inconclusive so I would say the stock intercooler does very well in that environment.

Results on the road (ambient 72F) were more measurable with the IAT average delta 11.68F cooler for the GP. Traffic altered test loads favoring the stock IC with boost running an average 5 psi less. The surface temp delta was 7F cooler for the GP for whatever that’s worth.

Keep in mind that “in the field" testing is less than ideal from the controls stand point and experimenter bias is bound to have an effect in the analysis. The inference I get from the results is, at the drag strip, moving up the queue through the staging area (photo op delays from girls in high heels, fishnet stockings, and very little else) creates heat soak that is difficult to overcome given the time/distance/load in that environment. On the highway the high volume of air flow narrows the performance differences. On the road/street where there are periods of alternating load demands, the GP is at its best displaying rapid recovery rates resulting in overall lower IATs.

Nice post & a thanks much.
Bottom line, in "", I think this is what most are looking for. A better lower average IAT & from your post the GP does exactly that.

GP Intercooler parts for retrofit ordered

I ordered the GP Intercooler parts today, I used the part numbers posted here on NAM, yesterday when I asked my contact at the dealer about getting this I was told that they did not have any diagrams of the part in the system yet, so I told him i have the part numbers, he said bring it in and he would check the system so I did and all the numbers are there so he did the order now just waiting for them to arrive.
Here is the pricing on their system:
17-51-7-565-302 Air cooler $258 List
17-51-7-565-345 Sealing Plate $201 List
17-51-7-511-947 Support $6.50 List (2 needed I think these are just screws)
51-13-4-404-668 Air Duct $66.25 List

Hopefully I will have these on Friday

I have the MCW software upgrade on my 02 MCS with 15% SC pulley, Alta intake and Milltek catback but without 380 injectors!

And don't get me wrong here, I have a lot of respect for quite a few people on here regarding their knowledge of all this stuff as I am a direct beneficiary, but I couldn't help but chuckle regarding the above statement like duh like blond but a belt one mile thick sure would change the speed! heavieeee! and one more technical question... how would you fit one such belt under the hood? thanks

PS Just pokin fun, thanks for all the great input.

Ahh... I won't tell you the 380s are the best mod ever or better than sliced bread,"my car is faster than yours", your mother wears combat boots but they will make a difference. Well worth the $$$, more so than many other more $$$ mods even without the software.

All, I have "cleaned up" this thread by moving all of the posts relating to pulley size & compression to a new thread titled "Pulleys & compression". This thread is now on-topic for the GP IC.

For what it's worth...

I'll be doing some more IC testing over the next couple of weeks, so I should be able to quantify the pressure drop of the GP vs the stocker soon.

Cool Matt, thanks for all that time you spend doing this. I've had my GP Intercooler on for a few months now, and have definitely noticed the improvement in heat soak with our fun Valley of the Sun summers. Hard to quantify that i know, but during auto-x it sure seems to maintain power better from run to run.

But sad to say, I may not have time for all the testing I did in the past.... I may actually have to go back to work and earn a real living! (For those that didn't know, I got pissed at my boss and quit my job about 18 months ago. Taking care of my two girls (2.5 yrs and 4 months) has been priceless, but the bank accounts are hinting its' time for something else....
