what to do? M62 or Alta turbo kit?

I just bought my mini last week and I have the mod bug. I have a chance at getting a M62 kit for a real good price and free labor, or I was going to get a turbo kit in a year to get 250whp. I heard after 250whp the car will need new pistons and maybe lower compression, some where in the mid 8's. I know the turbo's are proven and but the m62 is the talk of the town. What would you do? I also just ordered 19" wheels, intake, 17% pulley, Unichip software and springs.
Thanks guys and btw I love the board.

whatever youll do, cancel the unichip software and pulley right now.
its a waste of money, youll need custom software either with the turbo or with the m62.

then, go with the m62, or make a singe turbo engine without supercharger...

DDM is making a Unichip tune for the M62. If that is the ECU you want, go for it. But, ya stay away from the pully. In the case of either mod, you are just going to have to get rid of it...

Both are viable HP Mods. I think what will drive the direction is not purely how much each delivers in HP but the concept of how it delivers the HP. Your either attracted to the SC approach or Turbo approach. While I appreciate the pluses and minuses of both when it comes to the MINI for me the SC is more old school and building off of the existig car and the turbo is more new school approach. I don't think performance wise one would be disappointed with either for both are going to produce a MINI on steroids.

I believe I can use the Unichip piggy back system to control a larger blower or turbo and I can use it in series with an Apexi.

After sleeping on it last night I think I'm going to stay with my 17%, wheels and everything else and save money to get a Turbo kit in a year. The supercharger M62 would be nice because I would be one of the first but from reading some of the old post. It looks like 190whp or so. I know with stock pistons and a turbo I can get at least 250whp and if I change the pistons then 300+whp is easy. Plus I love the sound of a blow off valve.

Thank you guys and I look forward to learning more about Mini's. I have only owned mine for 5 days.

You don't need to do pistons to get 300whp. Talk to Randy Webb if you are serious about this. Doing cam, head, TBE, 28rs, runners, intake manifold, etc, you can get to >300whp without doing bottom end work. You will need at least a Spec 2 clutch to handle that though. Not enough clamping force in the OEM one to last long.

So, I guess no matter what, you have no interest in the manufacterer's warranty if you just purchased a new one, or caught this bug in a very feverish way to jump in this deep.

If I were you I would do my Unichip and pulley and wait at least a year for the dust to settle on the Turbo and the M62 wars.

Have fun while others do the beta testing.

I do agree with you, I'm going to do the mods I have already ordered this Saturday and then wait for about 8 months to a year and then do the turbo kit. I'm not sure if I want to be a tester for the M62 on the westcoast.

I love modding cars. I have messed with every car I have owned this one will be no different even though a week ago I thought I would keep it stock. I will post pix next week with the new wheels and trim parts I have purchased.

Here is a link on my first post and pic, https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=79468
Thanks
Mario

Welcome to NAM and congratulations on the new MINI. If you have any questions regarding the Alta turbo kit, please don't hesitate to ask. I'll be posting a video soon of my twincharged MINI. Seems like by the time your are ready to up the power the hydra EMS will be available. This will be a welcome addition to the already great potential of the Alta kit.

Let me know if I can help you out.

Thanks, Cliff

Hydra is the parent company for the ecu. It will be distributed by Alta and their dealers. It is a complete standalone ecu solution and has been very popular in other applications such as the subaru wrx. More info can be found here: Hyda EMS
