JCW Intake -> Alta CAI

Ok, so right now I'm almost finished with putting in my Alta CAI and I ran into a problem.

I have the JCW kit installed on my car and I just realized that the JCW intake has a batch of hoses running around inside/outside the air box. These hoses are then routed to a small box, which was bolted to the outside of the top of the air box and then plugged into a connector attached to the fuse box.

The connector looks like it is just part of the "spare" section of the fuse box.

What I want to know is, am I going to get a Check Engine Light as soon as I start up because A) the hoses aren't connected to anything or B) because I disconnected that plug coming from the JCW box?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...sort of sad to see my car in the garage with her guts out

Thanks!

While I'm not directly familiar with the JCW intake, as I've never seen it, I don't see any reason why it would be different than the regular MCS intake. If you have a camera, some pictures of what you're talking about may help. My only guess would be that perhaps it's related to the Mass Airflow Sensor, but without seeing it, I'm not sure.

Edit: I know for a fact people have changed the intake on a JCW car, so whatever this is, i'm sure there's either a work around for it, or it's not required for normal vehicle function.

You will need to plug up the vacuum hose with something. I used the "inner foot" from an old external hard drive case, it fit perfectly for me. But you shouldn't run into any issue leaving the cable hanging.

The vacuum hose is used to activate the flap; the electronics are used to signal the opening...

I ended up reinstalling the JCW intake though, I felt the Alta was much louder in my JCW than my previous MCS.

Sounds like someone answered your question for ya. I figured it could have been a vacuum hose, but didn't really know what the answer to your question was (What do to with it). Depending on the size of it, you can check with people and see what they use, but I would think a golf tee would work great to plug it .

Still more questions:

On the side of the JCW air box, there is a small box. This box joins all the small air lines into one. On the side of the small "air joiner thingy" there is a jack for a connector. That connector attaches to the small box which has two lines coming out of it. One line runs to the "Spare" fuse and the other runs somewhere down the driver side behind the fender.

Is it necessary to plug in that little jack at all, from the side of the JCW box?

I'm worried about leaving it disconnected.

I'm not sure what it is. The only thing induction related that I have ever seen that requires power is a Mass Airflow Sensor. I don't know of anything specific to the Mini that differs from other cars I've worked on in the past. I'm just not really sure what could be attached to the air box that plugs into your fuse box. It's possible that this is related to something else, unrelated to induction and it just happens to be attached to the side of the air box because it was a convenient mounting location ?

Don't worry about leaving the electrical connector disconnect it won't affect anything. The wire going into the spare fuse box it most likely the power wire and will be connected with the 10mm bolt.

As for the vaccuum line follow it back to the bypass valve and remove it there as you will find it is just T'd into that line. Then just reconnect the line to the bypass valve.

Hopes this helps, if not feel free to call the shop.

Ok so here are some pictures.

The first picture shows the connector on the side of the air box.

Second picture shows the small box that has a connector for the air box and the connector for the fuse box.

Third pictures shows how the connector for the air box and the relay click together.

The only real concern is the one vacuum connection from the JCW Airbox to the system... And it attaches at the front left of the box. Mine had a white coupling between the JCW Airbox and the Vacuum line. Eveything else can be tucked away (maybe put a piece of tape over the connections to keep them clean.)

I got a few more pics here if they help you: http://mug.ods.org/gallery/20060415JCWIntake

There is also an install PDF on Motoringfile if you haven't seen that yet.

Ok, so that main line coming into the front of the airbox on the JCW...

What should I do with that now?

Here's what I'm getting out this, to do. I am going to leave the connector unplugged from both the air box (duh, because it's not there anymore) and from the main fuse line. I'll hide that in a secure place. Next, Im going to somehow plug up that vacuum line that was entering through the front of the JCW air box.

Does this sound right?

Completed

Thank you guys for your help, I am really grateful for it. I'm glad you were all online when I ran into the issue .

I got everything together. I capped off the vacuum hose and tucked the JCW relay away into the corner, just in case it's needed sometime soon. I made sure everything was tight and took her for a spin.

Boy does she wine and hiss! I love the sound and so far am very pleased. And so far no CEL .

Thanks again for all of your help on this one!
