Warranty and mods...

That's a touchy subject with me now, so I'll just speak my mind and then be quite about it...

Hopefully someone here can answer specifics about Moristown MINI...

Here in Southern California some dealers (for example, Crevier) are recording if and where you have mods. In the case of pulleys, at least one owner, a friend of mine, was told by his dealer (Crevier) that because of his Alta 15% reduction pulley, his whole engine was no longer covered under warranty. There is no assumption of reasonableness or consistancy, even though JCW, Dinan and Mini Madness all use similar pulleys and yet are still covered under warranty by all (in the case of JCW), most (in the case of Dinan) and some (in the case of Mini Madness) of the dealers.

Also be aware that like many manufacturers, BMW/MINI USA appears to have people taking VIN numbers of MINIs that are found at the race tracks, the result being totally voided warranties.

Some dealers are worse than others, but in general if you are very concerned about your warranty, wait until it is over before you mod and/or track.

In particular, if you are serious about modding and/or tracking, don't even consider getting an extended warranty or service agreement from the dealer. Save that considerable amount of money for just about any aftermarket mod that you want and/or track time wherever you want it.

Pass that recommendation to any friends interested in MINIs too, perhaps the dealerships will notice it in their pocketbooks.

Some folks say it is the right of the manufacturer/dealer to do this kind of thing, that it is in writing in the warranty agreements... Well, some of us got succured into buying extended agreements before we even knew what mods were or what needs they filled.

Whatever the case, I agree with the dealer's rights to the extent that they cannot be expected to understand and cover whatever mods that we might install, so there is some expectation of reasonableness on both sides. But to void a whole engine or a whole vehicle doesn't meet that expectation at all.

But in the absense of that, we also have a right to vote with our pocketbooks. Many dealerships enjoy significant income from extended service and warranty agreements. It is a good way to tell them how you feel.

Now I'll be quiet about that.

I hope you have better luck with Morristown.

You are just as far from going to Prestige MINI, you may do a bit better there trust me.

But you would trust a "tire shop"?

Lodi.....man do I miss home! God do I miss the great food!! The best home made pasta anywhere http://www.pastaboy.com/

Ok, enough with going down memory lane.

Good luck with your pulley, but whatever you do...do not let a tire ship work on your engine. Go to Philly and get the work done.....then get a cheese steak sandwich. MAN St. Louis food sucks!!

So you're saying Prestige MINI would be a better bet to bring my MINI to for service? I bought my MINI from Morristown because it was the only used one that fitted the specs that I wanted. Last year, Dwight from Prestige ordered me a brand new 05 MINI then after it came in we finally realized I didn't have enough credit to purchase it. Then the main guy in charge of financing was pressuring me into a 650$ car payment! After I finally realized I couldn't get that MINI, it was such a sad day....I saved up more money then decided on buying used.

I'm at about 24,900 miles, and service is in the next 1400 miles, after this service, I remember my salesperson said that the next service would be in another 10,000 or 15k miles which will be way beyond my Warrenty.

Should I push for one more service before warrenty ends?

I got some feedback from another NJ guy (Peter W) who used Helix, and Morristown Mini was his dealership. He said: "I have had no problems in the dealership with services on my car with the modifications i have on it. " He had a nicely modded '04 for sale on Marketplace https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=65961 Maybe contact him directly for info.

Lord of the Flies drives from NYC to Mo'town MINI for service and repair. He has a modded MINI. He hasn't reported any problems with the service department yet. In fact, he bought his second MINI from them.

BTW, check nemini.org for local feedback on dealerships in the area.

MINI of the Main Line in Philly have been great with helix mods. They're a first class operation.
