Had it done yesterday lunchtime. I was back at my desk in under an hour. It makes the sound a little deeper and adds a burble when I lift off the throttle.
No dyno results, but other posters have reported a couple of horses improvement.

I'm about to install a custom one-ball. I'm using a slip fit and c-clamp to tie into the exsisting 2.5" piping to the single stock muffler. I'm doing this so I can install my "race-only" muffler on track days (dynomax race bullet with turndown).

I let you know how it goes.

Or how not to!

On a very hot day, at a local autocross last year, the pits were in an adjacent parking lot bordered by a chain link fence. Rather than make a 200+ yard walk around the fence one of our competitors, wearing loose, very short, shorts decided to jump the fence. He didn't make it! Well, not all of him anyway, he caught his nut sack on the top of the fence.

Thankfully he has made a full recovery but plans no more attempts at a one ball mod.

Just one part of the puzzle...

As has been mentioned, there are lots of threads on this topic, but it's always fun to toss it around more...

I had a 1-ball done when I had my CAI, pulley and cold plugs installed. I worked with a very reputable local performance specialist who did them all more-or-less like a package for me. He spoke of it like a system upgrade, in this case the system we're talking about is how the car breathes.

Since I had all my work done a the same time I can't really quantify any specific HP change with my 1-ball, but most experienced folk will tell you the big advantages of a 1-ball -- as well as any cat-back exaust mods -- are tone improvement and weight reduction. Plus with the 1-ball you get that at a very low cost.

That said, there have been back-pressure studies done that indicate that at 1.75psi, the 1-ball is one of the most unrestrictive cat-back exaust systems ( http://www.mini2.com/forum/engine-dr...g-results.html ), so there probably is some small tangible HP improvement with it alone, possibly more if done with a pulley and more yet if you also get headers (which I didn't do). But again, most experienced folk will tell you that the MINI's biggest outbound bottleneck is the exaust valves in the MINI head, so anything in the exaust system downstream of that is not going to do remarkably much for HP.

My 1-ball is a custom welded job. For a number of reasons I had the 1-ball done in such a way that the exaust still looks bone stock with both mufflers still in place. With the mod un-noticable unless you get under the car and peek under the heat shield or unless you touch the cold right side muffler, I guess it is more of a 50% vascectomy instead of a 50% castration. As such, I don't have any weight savings, but I do get the sound and the reduced back pressure. The weight reduction on a typical 1-ball is about 20 to 30 pounds of sprung weight; I figure I can leave some tools that I carry in the boot at home if I want to save that.

I had my work done at around 4k miles, now at about 8k miles, with the addition of some thermal insulation in my metal CAI airbox that significantly mutes the supercharger whyne, I've really begun hearing the results of the 1-ball more...

There is more noticable burble. When it is cold, it tends to be a little rattley, even tinny like some of the older technology glass-packs. After a few minutes when it is warmed up, it is more throaty, deeper, on releasing the throttle the popping of the MINI burble is deeper, more emphatic. Understated is a good description; I'd guess that it is about 30% to 50% louder than stock but it is still not too loud. I really like understated power sounds, with the muted supercharger whyne and the 1-ball I get that now.

I hope that helps...

Best,

-- Don

20-30 pounds off of one side... That might throw the side to side balance off when autoX or driving the Tail of the Dragon. HMM.... Might want to follow VBG's advice and go for a Vasectomy rather than castration.
